The call

The core telecom network stays protected by regulation and physical infrastructure while TELUS itself automates away jobs at its BPO arm, TELUS Digital.

Telus is one of three huge phone and internet companies in Canada that together control almost all wireless customers. The physical towers, fiber cables, and radio frequencies they own are extremely hard for anyone to build from scratch, and the Canadian government won't let new competitors easily enter. However, Telus is now aggressively replacing its customer service workers with AI voice systems (partnering with a company called ElevenLabs), moving jobs to India and the Philippines, and cutting its Canadian staff from 28,000 to 25,200 in one year. The company itself is destroying its own call-center business with automation while the main phone network stays protected. The big unknown is whether CEO Victor Dodig will push this job-cutting deeper into the core network and support teams that actually keep people's phones working, which could destabilize the company's ability to serve customers reliably.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI voice agents and automation (ElevenLabs partnership, TELUS Digital). TELUS is using AI voice agents to automate its own TELUS Digital call-center unit, cutting the jobs that unit used to sell. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Bell Canada and Rogers Communications. The three-way Canadian wireless oligopoly keeps pricing tight and margins squeezed, but none of the three is meaningfully taking share from another. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. CRTC spectrum licenses and physical fibre/tower infrastructure that no new entrant can replicate quickly.
What would change this call
Canadian headcount trend past the 25,200 (2025) level over the next 12 months. Would show whether AI/offshoring cuts stay confined to TELUS Digital or spread into core telecom operations.
Confirmation or denial of the claimed March 2026 ShinyHunters 1PB data breach and $65M ransom demand. Would show whether a major cybersecurity failure and customer-trust loss actually occurred.
CRTC junk-fee review outcome after its 60-day window from June 30, 2026. Would show whether regulators are moving toward broader pricing intervention on TELUS.

Questions people ask
Is Telus Corporation profitable in 2026?
Yes but under pressure. Q1 2026 revenue was $5.01 billion with adjusted EPS of $0.23, beating consensus, but operating income fell to $534 million from $752 million a year earlier due to $315 million in restructuring costs, and dividend growth was paused.
Could AI replace Telus Digital's call center jobs?
It already is. Telus Digital partnered with ElevenLabs in June 2026 to route high-volume routine customer interactions to voice AI agents, part of a plan to generate $150-200 million in annualized synergies from AI-driven automation following its October 31, 2025 privatization.
Who is Telus Corporation's biggest competitor?
Bell Canada (BCE) and Rogers Communications are Telus's closest rivals. Together Bell, Rogers and Telus control roughly 90% of Canadian wireless sector revenue as of 2025, per CRTC-sourced data, making it a stable three-player oligopoly.
Is Telus laying off workers in Canada?
Telus's Canadian headcount fell from 28,000 to 25,200 during 2025 even as global headcount rose to 111,500, with Canada now just 22% of the global workforce versus 56% a decade ago, reflecting offshoring to India and the Philippines.
Who owns Telus Corporation?
Telus is a widely held public company with no controlling parent, listed as TSX:T and NYSE:TU. It fully absorbed its former subsidiary Telus Digital (formerly Telus International) by completing a privatization for about US$539 million on October 31, 2025.
Did Telus have a data breach in 2026?
A group calling itself ShinyHunters claimed in March 2026 to have stolen over 1 petabyte of Telus and Telus Digital data and demanded a $65 million ransom, but as of the July 2026 brief this claim was unverified beyond a tertiary source.
