The call

Tencent Cloud is profitable and growing behind China's regulatory wall, but Alibaba Cloud sits ahead of it inside that same wall.

Tencent Cloud rents computing power and storage to Chinese businesses, similar to Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure. It is hard to replace because China's government blocks foreign cloud companies from operating there, and Tencent owns WeChat, a messaging app with 1.4 billion users it can steer toward its cloud service. However, this same government protection also helps two bigger rivals: Alibaba Cloud and Huawei Cloud, which already have larger market shares and deeper roots in Chinese business. The one thing that could change the picture is whether Tencent's parent company decides to spend heavily on AI computing power and push cloud sales aggressively, or keeps treating cloud as an internal support service rather than a main profit driver.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is feeding this business, not eating it: AI services lifted FBS gross margin 4pp to 51% in 2025. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Alibaba Cloud. Alibaba holds 34-36% of China cloud versus Tencent's 9-15%, and an AI-cloud lead there could push Tencent below 8% share. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. China's Great Firewall and MLPS licensing block foreign hyperscalers, and WeChat's 1.43B users feed Tencent Cloud captive demand.
