The call

TME keeps growing paid subs and revenue while a free-riding ByteDance rival and unlicensed AI tracks both press on its edges.

Tencent Music lets Chinese users stream songs and pay for premium subscriptions, making money from 127 million paying customers. It is hard to replace right now because it has exclusive deals with record labels, deep ties to WeChat (China's main messaging app), and government support in China. However, two big problems are coming: ByteDance (the company behind TikTok) is aggressively pushing its own music app called Soda Music with 140 million users and growing fast, and artificial intelligence tools like Suno and Udio are creating songs for free and flooding music catalogs, which could make subscription services less valuable. Whether Tencent stays on top depends on whether China makes clear rules about AI-generated music rights (which does not exist yet) and whether Soda Music can actually convince people to pay for music instead of using it free on social media.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI song-washing tools like Suno and Udio flooding catalogs with unlicensed tracks. Management calls AI 'song-washing' industry chaos and a direct headwind to subscription growth. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: ByteDance's Soda Music. Soda Music hit 140M MAU, up 90% YoY, though it has not shown paid subscribers at scale yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Exclusive label licensing, WeChat/Weixin distribution, and 127.4M paying subscribers with a growing Super VIP tier.
What would change this call
Soda Music discloses paid subscribers or a licensed premium tier. Would show ByteDance converting free MAU into TME's paying-subscriber base.
TME's Q2/Q3 2026 earnings show paid-sub growth or Super VIP additions slowing. Would show the monetized core cracking under Soda/AI pressure.
China SAMR issues AI-music copyright rules within 2026. Would show whether regulation entrenches TME's licensed catalog or opens the field to unlicensed rivals.

Questions people ask
Is Tencent Music Entertainment profitable in 2026?
Yes. TME's FY2025 revenue hit RMB32.90bn (US$4.71bn), up 15.8% YoY, and the company approved a ~US$368 million annual cash dividend plus a US$1 billion buyback, per its 2026-03-17 earnings release.
Who owns Tencent Music Entertainment?
Tencent Music is a majority-owned, publicly traded subsidiary of Tencent Holdings, trading as NYSE:TME and HKEX:1698. Spotify held roughly 16.47% of TME's Class A shares as of 2023, a cross-shareholding dating to 2017.
Is ByteDance's Soda Music beating Tencent Music?
Not yet on revenue, but it is gaining fast. Soda Music's MAU grew from ~120 million in September 2025 to ~140 million by March 2026 (about 90% YoY), while TME's MAU fell roughly 5% YoY in Q4 2025.
Could AI replace Tencent Music's business?
Not directly, but AI is hurting it. TME's own executives said in May 2026 that unlicensed 'AI song-washing' content is causing 'industry chaos' and headwinds for subscription growth, even as TME's licensed catalog and WeChat integration remain hard for AI tools to replicate.
Is Tencent Music stock a safe investment right now?
It's contested. TME shares fell over 60% from a 52-week high of ~$26.70 to about $8.77 to $8.86 by 2026-07-24, despite revenue growth, as investors weighed Soda Music competition and AI-content risk against a still-growing 127.4 million paying subscriber base.
Did Tencent Music acquire Ximalaya?
Yes. TME completed a $2.4 to $2.9 billion acquisition of Ximalaya, China's largest audio platform (formerly over 45% of the audio-app market), on 2026-05-18, after China's SAMR conditionally cleared it with bans on exclusive deals and fee hikes.
