The call

TerraPower leads on paper and permits, but its future now hangs on whether a first-of-a-kind sodium reactor gets built on time and on budget.

TerraPower designs and builds next-generation nuclear power plants that use molten salt cooling instead of water, aiming to be safer and cheaper than traditional reactors. It got the first government permit in over 40 years to build one commercially, which is hard to copy because nuclear regulation is extremely strict and takes years to navigate. The real problem is that big nuclear projects in America almost always go way over budget and miss deadlines (see the Vogtle and VC Summer projects), and TerraPower has never actually finished and operated one of these reactors in the US before, so nobody knows if they can pull it off. The company will probably survive because it has backing from Bill Gates, the government, and tech companies that have promised to buy power from it, but whether investors make money hinges entirely on whether the first plant in Wyoming gets built on time and on budget starting in 2026, with power expected around 2030 to 2032.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI data-center power demand is driving orders (Meta, Nvidia investment), not displacing TerraPower's business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Google and Amazon backing rival reactor developers Kairos Power and X-energy. Big tech is spreading AI power bets across multiple advanced reactor makers, so Natrium isn't the only path to that demand. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Holds the first NRC Part 50 construction permit for a non-light-water reactor in 40+ years, with construction already underway and DOE covering half the cost.
What would change this call
Kemmerer Unit 1 construction cost or schedule updates versus the ~$4B/2030-2032 targets. Shows whether TerraPower can execute a first-of-a-kind nuclear build without overruns.
Oklo, X-energy, or Kairos Power achieving commercial first power before Kemmerer. Would undermine TerraPower's claim to advanced-reactor leadership.
TerraPower's operating license application and NRC review outcome (expected 2027-2028). Tests whether the regulatory moat holds through the next licensing stage.
Key numbers
  • First Part 50 permit for non-light-water reactor in 40+ yrs (2026-03-04)
  • Meta deal: up to 8 Natrium plants, 2.8-4 GW baseload (2026-01-08)
  • Kemmerer project cost ~$4B, DOE covering up to $2B (2026-05-20)
Named risks
  • First-of-a-kind sodium-cooled reactor construction faces cost or schedule overrun like Vogtle (7 years, $17B over) or VC Summer (cancelled after $9B). Severity: high
  • Active DOJ I-9 immigration-compliance proceeding (Case No. 2024A00094) unresolved as of February 2026. Severity: medium
  • Kemmerer operating license application, expected 2027/2028, could face regulatory friction. Severity: medium
  • Pre-revenue, capital-intensive model dependent on continued large funding rounds across Kemmerer, Utah, Kansas, and Philadelphia projects. Severity: medium
  • A rival (Oklo, X-energy, Kairos) achieving commercial power-on first could undercut TerraPower's leadership claim. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is TerraPower profitable in 2026?
No. TerraPower is a private, pre-revenue company on its reactor side with no IPO planned, according to a July 23, 2026 report. Its capital comes from equity rounds, DOE cost-share, and customer deals like the January 2026 Meta agreement, not product revenue.
Who owns TerraPower?
TerraPower is privately held. Major backers include founder Bill Gates via Cascade Investment, South Korea's SK Group (roughly $250M to $830M invested since 2022), HD Hyundai, and NVIDIA's venture arm NVentures, which made its first-ever energy investment in TerraPower's $650M round closed June 18, 2025.
Could AI replace TerraPower?
No. TerraPower builds physical, heavily regulated nuclear infrastructure, holding the first NRC Part 50 construction permit for a non-light-water commercial reactor in over 40 years, granted March 4, 2026. AI is a demand driver, not a substitute; Meta and NVIDIA are investing to secure AI data-center power, not replacing TerraPower's work.
Who is TerraPower's biggest competitor?
Advanced-nuclear peers include Oklo, NuScale, X-energy, and Kairos Power, each with hyperscaler ties (Amazon, Google) or public listings. As of March 2026, TerraPower is the only one with an actual granted construction permit and active build underway at Kemmerer, Wyoming, started April 23, 2026.
When will TerraPower's Natrium reactor actually generate power?
Construction on Kemmerer Unit 1 began April 23, 2026, with Bechtel as EPC contractor and about 1,600 workers mobilized. TerraPower and Meta's January 2026 agreement targets first Natrium units as early as 2032, with the company's operating license application expected in 2027 or 2028.
Did NVIDIA really invest in a nuclear reactor company?
Yes. NVIDIA's venture arm, NVentures, made its first-ever energy investment by participating in TerraPower's $650 million funding round, closed June 18, 2025, alongside Bill Gates and HD Hyundai, explicitly tying AI chip demand to future nuclear power supply.
