The call

Tigermed's China trial business runs deep and profitable, but nearly half its revenue sits exposed to a US list that hasn't been finalized yet.

Tigermed runs a clinical trial business that helps pharmaceutical companies test new drugs in China. It has deep connections with Chinese regulators and owns real offices and labs that are hard to replace, but bigger rivals like WuXi AppTec and IQVIA also operate in China and have more resources. The company's main problem is that AI software is starting to do some of the high-paying work that Tigermed used to do (like writing medical documents and finding trial sites), squeezing profits. What matters most over the next year is whether the US government blocks Tigermed from doing work with American drug companies (a law passed in December 2025 could do this) and whether the company can actually turn its new client bookings into real money overseas or just in China.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-powered trial site-feasibility and medical writing/translation tools. AI translation and writing tools threaten the ancillary services Tigermed sells alongside trial management, squeezing margins already near 5%. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: WuXi AppTec and IQVIA. WuXi AppTec is larger and more diversified, and analysts favor it over Tigermed; IQVIA leads China-linked international trials. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep NMPA regulatory relationships and infrastructure behind 61% of China's Class I drug approvals since 2004.

Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue RMB 6,833M, net margin about 5% (2026-03-30)
  • Net new bookings up 20.6% YoY to RMB 10,158M (2026-03-30)
  • 46% of 2025 revenue came from overseas markets (2026-03-30)
Named risks
  • BIOSECURE Act OMB companies-of-concern list (due Dec 2026) could name Tigermed, threatening 46% overseas revenue. Severity: high
  • Thin net margins, roughly 5% on FY2025 revenue of RMB 6,833 million. Severity: medium
  • Prior multi-year revenue contraction before the 2025 bookings recovery. Severity: medium
  • Larger, more diversified rivals like WuXi AppTec and established giants like IQVIA already compete directly in China. Severity: medium
  • AI-driven automation of translation, writing, and site-feasibility work could erode high-margin ancillary services. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Tigermed in financial trouble?
There are real financial warning signs but not a collapse in the underlying business. FY2025 total revenue was RMB 6.83B (2025-12-31), and net new bookings grew 20.6% year over year to RMB 10,158M over the same period, showing demand held up, but Q1 2026 net profit dropped 70.36% year over year to RMB 49.04M (2026-03-31), which is the sharpest concern. Global headcount rose 9.28% year over year to 11,130 as of 2025-12-31, and contracted backlog grew 15.4% year over year to RMB 18,202M over the same period, suggesting the business retains scale even as profitability has come under pressure.
Who are Tigermed's biggest competitors?
IQVIA currently outranks Tigermed in China trial volume and holds the top spot, with Tigermed at #2 as of the July 2026 assessment. WuXi AppTec and domestic peer Pharmaron also contest its position, while ClinChoice is gaining ground as the #3 player in international trials run under China's human-genetic-resource rules.
Is Tigermed at risk from AI?
The AI threat to Tigermed is rated as building rather than acute. AI-assisted trial platforms like Medidata AI and Saama can speed up data entry, translation, and remote monitoring, but regulated site management and NMPA or FDA sign-off still require Tigermed's own staff and site relationships, including more than 700 trial sites and 4,000-plus SMO staff that have historically supported 61% of China's Class I drug approvals since 2004.
What is Tigermed's biggest risk right now?
The two biggest near-term risks are the sharp profit decline and the ongoing regulatory investigation. Q1 2026 net profit fell 70.36% year over year to RMB 49.04M (2026-03-31), and the CSRC investigation into executives Ye Xiaoping and Cao Xiaochun remains unresolved, a matter to track through the end of 2026 for its outcome and any material penalty. IQVIA's lead in China trial volume and US-China biotech decoupling also add pressure to Tigermed's overseas trial business.
Is Tigermed a leader or a challenger in its industry?
Tigermed operates China's largest clinical-trial network, built on more than 700 trial sites, 4,000-plus SMO staff, and a role in 61% of China's Class I drug approvals since 2004. IQVIA currently leads China trial volume with Tigermed at #2, while WuXi AppTec and Pharmaron contest its position and ClinChoice gains ground as the #3 player in international trials under China's human-genetic-resource rules. Overseas, however, it is described as a challenger rather than a leader due to US-China biotech decoupling.
What should I watch to see if Tigermed is stabilizing?
The clearest signal is the Q2 2026 earnings release scheduled for August 28, 2026, which will show whether net profit remains down year over year after the 70.36% drop reported for Q1 2026 (2026-03-31). Also worth tracking through the end of 2026 is the CSRC investigation into executives Ye Xiaoping and Cao Xiaochun, since a resolution or penalty could materially affect the company's footing. Backlog growth, which stood at RMB 18,202M and up 15.4% year over year as of 2025-12-31, is a useful counter-signal for whether client demand is holding steady.
