The call

Growth and AI citations are climbing together, while an Italian fine and short-seller allegations test whether the review data itself can be trusted.

Trustpilot is a website where customers post reviews of businesses, and thousands of companies pay to display those reviews on their own sites. It is hard to replace because Trustpilot has collected more verified reviews than anyone else, and merchants have already wired its system into their operations, but Google could build something similar if it wanted to. The one thing that could sink the company is if regulators or investigators prove that Trustpilot's reviews are fake or that it extorts businesses, which would destroy the only reason anyone trusts it in the first place.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. AI chatbots cite Trustpilot heavily today, driving 15x click growth, but could shift to zero-click answers that skip the click entirely. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Google (via Google Reviews/Business Profile). Google could build embeddable review widgets but its own destination-search model discourages sending users elsewhere. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A large dataset of verified reviews wired into 1.3M merchant sites, which AI engines already treat as a citable source.
What would change this call
Outcome of Trustpilot's appeal against Italy's AGCM $4.6M fine. Shows whether regulators can substantiate review-verification failures at the core of the moat.
Any second EU regulator opening a similar review-manipulation inquiry. Would signal contagion risk beyond Italy, threatening the data-trust foundation.
Trend in AI click-through and ChatGPT citation share over next 2+ quarterly reports. Shows whether AI assistants keep sending traffic or shift to zero-click answers.

Questions people ask
Is Trustpilot profitable in 2025?
Yes. Trustpilot reported FY2025 pretax profit of $14.1 million, nearly tripling from $5.2 million in FY2024, on revenue of $261.1 million (up 24% reported). Adjusted EBITDA was $40.7 million, a 15.6% margin, beating consensus of 14.9%, as of December 31, 2025.
Could AI replace Trustpilot?
Unlikely soon. As of January 2026 Trustpilot was the 5th most-cited domain on ChatGPT and saw click-throughs from AI search grow nearly 15x year-over-year, per company reporting. AI assistants currently route traffic to Trustpilot's 361 million verified reviews rather than replacing it, though zero-click risk remains a watch item.
Who is Trustpilot's biggest competitor?
Google (via Google Reviews/Business Profile) is the closest adjacent incumbent, dominating local review volume, though it is not building a competing embeddable widget product due to channel conflict with its own destination search model, per company brief dated 2025-12.
Is Trustpilot facing any regulatory trouble?
Yes. Italy's competition authority AGCM fined Trustpilot $4.6 million in March 2026 for misleading customers about review verification; Trustpilot is appealing. A December 4, 2025 short-seller report from Grizzly Research alleging 'mafia-style extortion' triggered a roughly 30% single-day share price drop.
Who owns Trustpilot?
Trustpilot Group plc is publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange under ticker TRST with no single controlling parent, following its March 2021 IPO that raised approximately £473 million. As of July 20, 2026, its market capitalization was roughly £1.02 to 1.06 billion.
Why did Trustpilot's stock crash in December 2025?
Grizzly Research published a short-seller report on December 4, 2025 alleging Trustpilot used a 'mafia-style extortion' business model and falsified reviews, which triggered a roughly 30% single-day share price drop, wiping out an estimated £200 to 243 million in market value. Trustpilot denied the allegations.
