Unisem
Malaysian OSAT firm packaging and testing chips for Renesas, MACOM, and others.
Unisem is riding an AI chip demand wave with revenue up sharply, but margins are being squeezed from both ends: advanced work moving in house at TSMC and Samsung, commodity work undercut by Chinese OSATs.
Unisem assembles, packages, and tests computer chips for companies like Renesas and MACOM. It is hard to replace because it has long-standing customer relationships and factories outside China, but it is getting easier to copy because TSMC, Intel, and Samsung are now doing their own advanced packaging work, and Chinese competitors like JCET and Huatian are undercutting prices on the standard packaging work where Unisem makes most of its money. The stock price has tripled in a year based on hope that artificial intelligence demand will save the business, but the company's actual profits fell one-third in the first nine months of 2025 even though revenue grew, which means costs are rising faster than sales and the company's new factory in Gopeng has not yet paid off. The one thing that could turn this around is whether that Gopeng plant becomes profitable by late 2026 as promised, or whether margin pressure from cheaper Chinese factories keeps grinding away at what Unisem can earn.
Core net margin trend in Q2/H1 2026 results versus revenue growth. Shows whether Chinese OSAT price competition is compressing margins faster than volume can offset.

- Is Unisem profitable in 2026?
- Yes but unevenly. FY2025 net profit hit RM291.19 million on revenue of RM1.87 billion (+18.4% YoY), yet 9M2025 net profit fell 33.6% YoY to RM34.52 million despite 19% revenue growth, hurt by FX losses and Gopeng plant ramp-up costs, as reported October 2025.
- Could AI replace Unisem?
- No. Unisem performs physical semiconductor assembly, packaging, wafer bumping and test, which AI cannot execute. AI is instead a demand tailwind, since Unisem packages power-management and automotive chips feeding AI data-center infrastructure, per company commentary from April 2026.
- Who owns Unisem?
- Huatian Technology (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a unit of China's Tianshui Huatian, holds 44% following a 2019 takeover. Chairman John Chia Sin Tet holds roughly 20-28%. Malaysia's KWAP became a substantial shareholder with 6.05% on July 16, 2026, and Norway's Norges Bank raised its stake to 5.13% on July 24, 2026.
- Who is Unisem's biggest competitor?
- Globally, ASE and Amkor lead the OSAT industry with comparable Southeast Asian capacity. China's JCET, the largest Chinese OSAT, posted FY2025 revenue of RMB38.87 billion (+8.1% YoY as of December 31, 2025), undercutting Unisem on price in standard packaging.
- Is Unisem stock overvalued?
- It is priced for a flawless AI cycle. Shares rose about 111% year over year as of July 24, 2026, hitting a 52-week range of roughly RM1.81 to RM5.38, even as core net profit grew just 3.6% YoY to RM63 million in FY2025 while bank borrowings doubled.
- What is Unisem's relationship with its parent company Huatian?
- China's Tianshui Huatian Technology, together with chairman John Chia, completed a takeover of Unisem in 2019 and now holds 44% through Huatian Technology (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd as of July 16, 2026. Notably, Huatian itself operates as a competing OSAT business.
