The call

Vietjet keeps growing inside a two-airline market that regulation protects, while a lessor judgment and heavy aircraft spending test how much debt that protection can carry.

Vietjet is a low-cost carrier that controls about 42% of Vietnam's domestic flights and dominates alongside Vietnam Airlines, which the government effectively shields from competing on price. Vietnam Airlines runs an older, pricier business model that would lose money if it tried to match Vietjet's fares, so Vietjet's position is hard to attack from inside the country; foreign budget carriers cannot easily enter because the government limits international routes and airport slots are scarce. The real danger is not competition but Vietjet's own balance sheet: it owes $200 million-plus from a legal judgment, has ordered billions of dollars in new planes that are arriving soon, and must make profit on longer international flights when regional airlines everywhere are cutting prices to survive.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI trip-planning tools and OTAs shift how tickets get found, but seats, slots, and planes still decide who flies. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Vietnam Airlines. State-backed flag carrier already competes for the same domestic routes and holds nearly half the market alongside Vietjet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Regulatory licensing, scarce airport slots at Noi Bai/Tan Son Nhat, and control of most of Vietnam's aircraft order backlog keep new capacity out.
What would change this call
Vietjet's domestic share falls below 40% in a published market report. Would show Sun PhuQuoc Airways or Bamboo Airways is pulling customers away.
FW Aviation quantum trial ruling lands with a judgment above ~$200M in 2026. Would show financial strain from lessor disputes weakening its balance sheet.
Q2 2026 earnings (due July 29, 2026) show margin decline on new widebody routes. Would show long-haul expansion is unprofitable, echoing Jetstar Asia's pre-closure pattern.

  • FW Aviation quantum trial in 2026 could add further financial liability beyond ~$181.5M judgment. Severity: high
  • Net debt/equity of 2.1x combined with multi-billion-dollar capex (A321neo, A330neo, P&W engines) creates financing strain. Severity: high
  • Regional LCC margin compression, exemplified by Jetstar Asia's 2025 closure, threatens profitability. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting reports on C909 lease termination and renewal indicate fleet/supply uncertainty. Severity: low
  • Intensifying domestic competition from new entrants and restructured carriers in 2026. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Vietjet profitable in 2025?
Yes. Vietjet's FY2025 audited results, released March 30, 2026, showed consolidated revenue of VND 82.093 trillion (about US$3.11 billion), up 14% YoY, and consolidated after-tax profit up 51.2% YoY, exceeding the company's annual plan by over 120%.
What is Vietjet's biggest competitor?
Vietnam Airlines, the state-backed flag carrier, is Vietjet's main rival; together they held about 90% of Vietnam's domestic market as of January 2026, per VnExpress reporting. Vietjet itself holds roughly 42% domestic share as of mid-2026 per Aviation Week.
Is Vietjet in financial trouble because of the FW Aviation lawsuit?
Vietjet lost its appeal on June 24, 2025, when the English Court of Appeal upheld a judgment of about US$181.5 million over defaulted aircraft leases with FW Aviation. The UK Supreme Court refused further appeal in October 2025; a further quantum trial was expected in 2026.
How much debt does Vietjet carry?
As of Q1 2026, Vietjet reported total assets of VND 143.534 trillion (about US$5.45 billion), a net debt to equity ratio of 2.1x, and a liquidity ratio of 1.5x, according to the company's own Q1/2026 results release dated May 1, 2026.
Could AI replace Vietjet's business?
No. Vietjet's core business rests on regulated aviation licenses, airport slots, and a fleet order backlog covering about 81% of Vietnam's national aircraft orders (Aviation Week, July 16, 2026), none of which AI can substitute; AI only touches marketing, booking, and maintenance analytics.
Who owns Vietjet?
Vietjet is publicly listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange under ticker VJC, but founder and Chairwoman Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao controlled roughly 45% combined as of a November 2023 disclosure through Sovico JSC, personal holdings, and Sunflower Sunny Investment Co. Ltd.
