The call

vLex sits on a real data and distribution base inside Clio, but Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis, and Harvey are all shipping AI tools aimed at the same lawyers right now.

vLex sells legal research software to law firms by combining 25 years of court documents from 110+ countries with access through Clio, a popular practice management platform used by 200,000 firms. The company is hard to replace because it has spent decades collecting legal documents from around the world and has a direct path to small and mid-size law firms through Clio, but Thomson Reuters (with its CoCounsel tool) and LexisNexis (with Lexis+AI and Protégé) have already released competing AI legal assistants that do similar work, and a startup called Harvey has raised $11 billion betting it can disrupt the entire category. The picture could change if Harvey or Thomson Reuters start aggressively selling their tools to the small and mid-market firms that currently rely on vLex through Clio.

Why
01
AI pressure: Harvey AI and Thomson Reuters CoCounsel. Harvey and CoCounsel already sell AI legal research and drafting tools that copy Vincent AI's job for BigLaw budgets. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Thomson Reuters (Westlaw/CoCounsel) and LexisNexis (Lexis+AI/Protege). Both incumbents have shipped AI assistants with far bigger sales forces and are pushing into vLex's international and small firm turf. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 1 billion plus proprietary documents across 110 countries plus Fastcase's all 50 state bar deals, now wired into Clio's 200,000 firm base.
What would change this call
Harvey or CoCounsel launches a priced small/mid-firm SKU within 12-18 months. Would show incumbents invading vLex/Clio's small firm stronghold.
Harvey or CoCounsel announces integration with Smokeball, MyCase, or PracticePanther. Would show rivals building distribution to bypass Clio's channel lock-in.
Am Law 100 firm publicly drops vLex/Vincent AI for CoCounsel or Harvey at renewal. Would show direct customer loss in vLex's current BigLaw base.
