The call

Xianyu keeps most of China's secondhand trade inside Alibaba's ecosystem, with AI negotiation agents still a lab experiment rather than a working rival.

Xianyu is Alibaba's platform where Chinese people buy and sell used items to each other, similar to Facebook Marketplace or eBay. It is hard to replace because it has three huge advantages: most sellers and buyers already use it (network effects), Alibaba's payment system and credit checks built in (trust infrastructure), and Alibaba's massive existing customer base to draw from. The main threat is not AI agents negotiating deals on their own, but rather whether Alibaba moves fast enough to add AI features like automatic listing creation and dispute handling into Xianyu itself within the next 6 to 12 months; if the company falls behind here, it could lose ground to rivals like Zhuanzhuan or to third-party AI tools that make selling elsewhere easier.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anthropic and similar labs testing autonomous negotiation agents. Labs are testing AI agents that negotiate resale deals directly, but none yet move real money on Xianyu's turf. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Zhuanzhuan (Tencent-backed secondhand marketplace). Zhuanzhuan already leads certified-refurbished electronics resale, chipping at Xianyu's higher-value niche. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Xianyu runs on Alibaba's Taobao traffic, Alipay payments, and Zhima Credit trust scores, infrastructure no standalone rival can copy.
What would change this call
Zhuanzhuan sustains over 40% share in certified-3C resale through 2026. Would show Xianyu losing ground in a growth sub-vertical despite overall leadership.
Alibaba ships first-party AI listing/negotiation features on Xianyu within 6-12 months. Would show Alibaba defending the moat with active investment, not organizational lag.
State Council Decree 810 tax enforcement data for Q4 2025/Q1 2026 shows informal seller GMV drop over 30%. Would show regulation materially shrinking Xianyu's core supply of casual sellers.
Key numbers
  • 72.9% share of China's secondhand e-commerce market (2024-2025)
  • 600 million+ registered users (late 2024)
  • RMB 200 billion+ transaction volume, 30 million+ sellers (pre-2023)
Named risks
  • New tax reporting rules (effective October 2025) may suppress informal seller GMV that fuels side-hustle growth. Severity: medium
  • Alibaba's internal GMV-doubling mandate (set July 2024) may push aggressive fee or monetization changes. Severity: medium
  • Frontier AI agents demonstrating autonomous peer-to-peer negotiation could pressure Xianyu to accelerate first-party AI features. Severity: low
  • Alibaba Group remains under lingering antitrust scrutiny from China's 2020-21 platform crackdown. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Who owns Xianyu (Idle Fish)?
Xianyu is wholly owned and operated by Alibaba Group as an internal business unit inside the Taobao Tmall group, with no external investors or independent IPO, as reported May 2025 by Jiemian Global.
Is Xianyu profitable?
Alibaba does not disclose standalone Xianyu profit figures. The platform has monetized via seller service fees (1% on monthly GMV over RMB 10,000 with 10+ orders) since mid-2023, per Sixth Tone, June 2025, but net profitability is not publicly reported.
What is Xianyu's market share in China's secondhand market?
Shenwan Hongyuan Research Institute reported Xianyu held a 72.9 percent market penetration rate in China's secondhand e-commerce market, cited in a May 2025 TechBuzz China analysis, making it the dominant C2C player.
Who is Xianyu's biggest competitor?
Tencent-backed Zhuanzhuan is Xianyu's main rival, controlling about 34 percent of China's professional-inspection smartphone resale market as of early 2026, though Xianyu and Zhuanzhuan together hold over 90 percent of online fashion recommerce, per Coresight Research, 2023.
Could AI agents replace Xianyu as a marketplace?
In May 2026, Anthropic's internal 'Project Deal' had Claude agents autonomously negotiate and close 186 secondhand trades worth over $4,000 in one week, but the experiment ran among 69 employees, not on Alipay's trust or payment rails that underpin Xianyu.
How many users does Xianyu have?
Xianyu reported over 600 million registered users by late 2024 and Alibaba claimed 178 million monthly active users in July 2024, according to a TechBuzz China analysis published May 2025.
