The call

Yahoo! Auctions still owns Japan's bidding-format niche and its parent is profitable, but the flea-market side is losing ground to Mercari and organic growth is thin.

Yahoo! Auctions Japan lets people bid on items from each other, similar to eBay. It has a loyal base of older collectors who trust its 20-year reputation and use its payment and shipping tools, but it is shrinking because Mercari's simpler app is winning over younger buyers (Mercari has 23 million users versus Yahoo Auctions' 5 million). The one thing that could shift the picture is whether Mercari decides to add auction features to its app, or whether AI shopping assistants start finding products without needing marketplaces at all.

Why
01
AI pressure: Agentic shopping assistants (ChatGPT, Claude-style agents). AI shopping agents could someday bypass browsing marketplaces entirely, but bidding-format auctions resist simple agent automation today. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Mercari, Inc.. Mercari's flat-price flea market app already has 22-23M MAU versus Yahoo!フリマ's 5M, though it has not built a real auction format yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Two decades of seller reputation data and an aging 40+ collector base locked into the bidding format and PayPay payment rails.
What would change this call
Mercari launches or announces a bidding/auction format inside its main app. Would show Mercari directly invading Yahoo Auctions' collector niche.
LY Corp discloses Yahoo Auctions/Reuse organic GMV separate from BEENOS-acquired revenue in an earnings report. Would reveal whether auction growth is real or just acquisition accounting.
A published survey shows under-40 user share rising or falling for Yahoo Auctions versus 2024 levels. Would show whether the aging user base is being replaced or shrinking.
Key numbers
  • LY Corp FY2025 revenue JPY2.036 trillion (2026-05-08)
  • Yahoo!フリマ ~5M MAU vs Mercari ~22-23M MAU (2025-08-06)
  • Reuse segment revenue JPY17,083M, +59% YoY (mostly BEENOS M&A) (2026-05-08)
Named risks
  • Yahoo!フリマ user base aging without under-40 replacement while Mercari pulls younger users. Severity: high
  • Reported reuse segment growth (+59% YoY) is largely BEENOS acquisition, masking flat organic auction demand. Severity: medium
  • NGO scrutiny (EIA, June 2025) over endangered species and whale product listings poses reputational/regulatory exposure. Severity: medium
  • Kakaku.com bidding war could divert LY Corp capital and management attention from core commerce/auction investment. Severity: medium
  • Ad platform integration (LY Ads Display, spring 2026) could disrupt auction-listing advertising revenue during transition. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Yahoo! Auctions Japan profitable?
Yahoo! Auctions sits inside LY Corporation's Commerce segment, which posted JPY857.6 billion revenue in FY2025 (year to March 2026), though adjusted EBITDA margin fell from 17.6% to 15.2%. LY Corp overall hit a record JPY496.6 billion adjusted EBITDA on JPY2.036 trillion revenue, per its May 8, 2026 earnings release.
Who owns Yahoo! Auctions Japan?
Yahoo! Auctions is a service of LY Corporation (TSE:4689), controlled by A Holdings Corporation, a SoftBank-Naver joint venture holding 62.5% of voting rights as of June 30, 2025. SoftBank Corp. itself holds roughly 62.64% directly and indirectly as of January 2026.
Is Yahoo! Auctions Japan losing to Mercari?
Yes in the flea-market format: Morningstar estimated Yahoo!フリマ at around 5 million monthly active users versus Mercari's 22-23 million as of August 6, 2025. Yahoo Auctions retains an older, auction-format-loyal base, but has not replicated Mercari's younger-user scale.
Could AI replace Yahoo! Auctions Japan?
AI is exposed at listing creation, price suggestion, and support chat, but the platform's PayPay payment integration, two-decade trust/reputation data, and Yamato/Japan Post logistics ties resist replication. LY Corp deployed AI search assistants and AI answer summaries from May 2024, expanded through 2025, mainly in search and ads, not auction listing workflows.
What is Yahoo! Auctions Japan's biggest competitor?
Mercari, Inc. (TSE:4385) is the dominant rival, reporting JPY1.1209 trillion in GMV and an estimated 40%+ share of Japan's marketplace-app segment for the fiscal year ended June 2025, versus Yahoo!フリマ's roughly 5 million MAU.
Is LY Corporation involved in any major acquisitions right now?
Yes, LY Corporation and Bain Capital are locked in a bidding war for Kakaku.com against EQT AB, with LY-Bain's offer raised to JPY3,384-3,500 per share against EQT's JPY3,450 (about JPY682 billion valuation), as reported July 24, 2026.
