Zama

Zama builds fully homomorphic encryption tools so blockchains and apps can compute on encrypted data.

The call

Zama has real cryptography and a growing developer base, but its business case still rests on an unshipped mainnet and an untested token model.

Zama makes software that lets computers do math on encrypted data without decrypting it first, and it wants to use this for blockchain applications. The company has real technical talent and open-source code that thousands of developers use, but it has not yet shipped its main product (delayed to late 2026), has no paying customers yet (only early tests), and is trying to make money through a cryptocurrency token that is highly volatile and concentrated in a few holders' hands. The biggest question in the next year is whether the token unlock in February 2027 will crash the price and whether anyone will actually pay to use the blockchain when it launches.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. LLMs cannot design FHE schemes or optimize bootstrapping; AI coding tools mainly help rivals copy dev tooling faster. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: IBM (HELayers) and Microsoft (SEAL). Both have FHE tech but show little interest in permissionless blockchain use cases, so pressure is soft, not a direct assault. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep cryptographic IP (40+ PhDs, dozens of patents) plus a 5,000+ developer open-source base rivals would need years to match.
What would change this call
Whether Zama's mainnet launches by end of 2026 with disclosed transaction or fee revenue. Shows whether the core product moves from proof-of-concept to real commercial usage.
Behavior of $ZAMA token price and equity valuation around the Feb 2, 2027 unlock cliff. Shows whether early investor and whale selling destabilizes the token economics underlying revenue plans.
Whether JPM Kinexys or KAIO convert their pilot programs into disclosed production contracts in 2026 to 2027. Shows whether enterprise interest translates into paying, recurring customers.
Key numbers
  • Over 5,000 developers use Zama's FHE libraries (2025-06-25)
  • $57M Series B, valuation over $1B (2025-06-25)
  • $ZAMA token sale raised ~$44M at ~$550M FDV (2026-02-02)
Named risks
  • Feb 2, 2027 token-unlock cliff releases team, investor and angel tokens simultaneously amid whale concentration. Severity: high
  • Full mainnet still unshipped as of Jul 2026 with only private beta live, delaying protocol-fee revenue model. Severity: high
  • Open-source core lets rivals like Fhenix and Inco build competing products atop Zama's own libraries. Severity: medium
  • No audited revenue disclosed; third-party revenue estimates conflict and are unconfirmed. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Zama profitable in 2026?
Zama has not disclosed audited profitability figures. It raised a $57M Series B on June 25, 2025 and holds over $150M in total equity funding at a $1B+ valuation, but its mainnet and protocol-fee revenue model remain unshipped as of July 2026, so profitability is unconfirmed.
Could AI replace Zama's cryptography work?
No. Novel FHE scheme design and bootstrapping optimization remain outside current LLM capability. AI mainly threatens developer tooling and glue code around Zama's libraries, potentially lowering the barrier for rivals like Fhenix or Inco to replicate its ecosystem, not the core cryptography.
Who is Zama's biggest competitor?
Fhenix and Inco are Zama's closest rivals in blockchain FHE; both reportedly build atop Zama's open-source libraries. Fhenix acquired Sunscreen on July 2, 2026 for quantum-resistant FHE, intensifying consolidation pressure in the category Zama helped create.
Who owns Zama?
Zama is privately held, founded in 2020 by Dr. Pascal Paillier and Dr. Rand Hindi, and backed by VCs including Multicoin Capital, Protocol Labs, Blockchange Ventures, and Pantera Capital, which co-led its $57M Series B on June 25, 2025.
Has Zama launched its mainnet yet?
As of July 28, 2026, Zama has not launched its full mainnet; the company's CEO stated the target is end of 2026, following a private beta launch of its Confidential RFQ swap protocol on Ethereum mainnet on July 24, 2026.
What happens to ZAMA token holders after Feb 2027?
A major token-unlock cliff on Feb 2, 2027 will release simultaneous team, investor, and angel lockups one year after the Feb 2, 2026 TGE, described by one analysis as ZAMA's biggest sell-pressure stress test given a single wallet already holds about 98M ZAMA tokens.
