The call

Zapier still runs a large, profitable connector business, but per-task pricing and MCP-driven agent routing are pressing on the model that built it.

Zapier lets people automate tasks between different software apps without coding, like sending Slack messages when emails arrive. For 13 years it built a library of app connections and became the trusted choice for small businesses, but this advantage is disappearing fast: Microsoft bundles Power Automate into Office 365 and sells it through the same channels, while cheaper competitors like n8n and Make offer similar features at lower prices, and now Anthropic released an open standard called MCP that could let anyone build what Zapier does. The question that decides Zapier's future is whether AI agents will need Zapier as the central hub they route through to connect apps, or whether they will learn to connect apps directly and leave Zapier unnecessary.

Why
01
AI pressure: MCP protocol (Anthropic) and AI agents that call apps directly. MCP lets AI agents trigger app actions on their own, threatening to route around Zapier's connector layer entirely. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Power Automate. Bundled into Microsoft 365 and sold by the same enterprise reps, giving customers a no-extra-cost substitute already live. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 13-year-old library of 9,000+ app connectors and 40,000+ actions that SMBs already depend on and rarely rebuild.
What would change this call
Zapier announces a shift from per-task to execution/operation-based pricing within 12 months. Would show Zapier addressing its main pricing disadvantage vs n8n and Make.
Microsoft bundles agent-orchestration features into M365 at no extra cost within a year. Would show the named incumbent closing off Zapier's core market with zero marginal cost.
Zapier's MCP gateway is cited by third-party AI agent platforms as a trusted connector layer. Would show Zapier becoming the plumbing AI routes through rather than being routed around.
Key numbers
  • $310M ARR (2024)
  • $5B valuation, unchanged since Jan 2021 secondary sale (2021-01)
  • 9,000+ connected apps, 40,000+ actions (2026-07-13)
Named risks
  • Per-task pricing model is costlier than rivals' execution/operation based pricing at scale. Severity: high
  • MCP protocol lets AI agents bypass Zapier's connector layer entirely. Severity: high
  • Valuation stuck at $5B since January 2021 with no confirmed re-mark or new funding round. Severity: medium
  • Microsoft Power Automate bundling threatens enterprise upmarket expansion. Severity: medium
  • Wide divergence in third-party headcount estimates (730 to 1,144) signals possible restructuring instability. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Zapier profitable in 2026?
Zapier has never disclosed formal profitability figures. It remains privately held and bootstrapped since 2011 with estimated ARR of $310M in 2024, per TapTwice Digital (2025-05-17); no independent audited profit data has been published.
Did Zapier have layoffs?
Yes. Zapier cut about 10% of staff in June 2023, which CEO Wade Foster explicitly linked to reallocating resources toward AI product development rather than AI replacing jobs, per IBTimes (2023-06-28).
Could AI replace Zapier?
Zapier's core trigger-and-action connector business faces commoditization risk from the MCP protocol, which Anthropic open-sourced in November 2024 and which lets AI clients call apps directly; Zapier's own MCP gateway, live through 2025-2026, is an unproven counter-move.
Who owns Zapier and what is it worth?
Zapier is privately owned by its founders and early investors including Sequoia Capital and Steadfast Financial, who bought secondary shares in January 2021 at a $5 billion valuation. That figure remains unchanged as of mid-2026 with no new round disclosed.
Who is Zapier's biggest competitor?
Microsoft Power Automate is Zapier's most structurally dangerous rival, bundled into Microsoft 365 and sold by the same enterprise reps at zero marginal channel cost, directly competing rather than being blocked out, as of 2026.
Is Zapier planning an IPO?
CB Insights lists Zapier in its 'Tech IPO Pipeline 2026' scouting reports as of 2026-07-04, indicating latent speculation, but no confirmed filing or new valuation update has been publicly disclosed since the $5B mark in January 2021.
