The call

Zyxel stays profitable on old ISP relationships while revenue and headcount shrink and bigger rivals ship the cloud-managed gear it's chasing.

Zyxel sells routers and networking equipment to internet providers and businesses. The company has long relationships with these customers and lots of devices already in use, which normally helps a company stay in business. However, bigger companies like Cisco, Ubiquiti, and TP-Link are now selling better products in the same markets, and Zyxel's sales have dropped for three years in a row. Two things could flip the situation: if the U.S. government ban on foreign routers after March 2027 treats Taiwan-made devices differently than expected, that could protect some of Zyxel's market. Or if the company can stop the decline and show stable sales in the next few months, it might prove it can compete again.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product is displacing Zyxel's gear yet; its own AI talk is a security-governance pitch, not a live threat to it. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Cisco Meraki, Ubiquiti, TP-Link, Netgear, Amazon Eero. Bigger rivals already ship cloud-managed routers and mesh gear that outsell Zyxel's, while revenue has fallen three years running. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Long-standing ISP channel deals and MSP firmware relationships that are slow for customers to rip out.
What would change this call
Zyxel's TTM revenue in next two quarterly filings continues or reverses the ~10% YoY decline. Shows whether channel losses to Ubiquiti, TP-Link, Netgear are stabilizing or worsening.
FCC clarifies Taiwan's exemption status under the foreign-router ban before March 1, 2027 cutoff. Determines whether Zyxel gains US channel share as TP-Link faces restrictions.
Zyxel discloses Nebula subscription revenue as a separate recurring-revenue line in a future annual report. Would show whether cloud services are offsetting hardware revenue decline.

Questions people ask
Is Zyxel Communications profitable in 2026?
Yes. Zyxel Group reported FY2025 net income of NT$634.14 million, up modestly year over year, even as revenue fell 2.6% to NT$25.30 billion. However, TTM revenue through Q1 2026 dropped 10.5% year over year to NT$24.57 billion, per stockanalysis.com.
Is Zyxel losing market share to competitors like TP-Link or Netgear?
Zyxel does not appear in Ookla/Speedtest US router usage-share data from January 2025 to March 2026, where Amazon Eero led at about 10%, TP-Link at 9.9%, and Netgear at 9.6%. Zyxel also went unmentioned in PCMag's 2025 Readers' Choice router satisfaction rankings.
Could AI replace what Zyxel makes?
Not the hardware itself. Zyxel manufactures physical CPE and holds ISP channel relationships AI cannot replicate, but its Nebula cloud-management layer, marketed with 'AI-driven' automation since the Nebula 19.30 release around January to February 2026, is a commodity feature matched by Cisco Meraki and Ubiquiti UniFi.
Who owns Zyxel Communications?
Zyxel Communications Corp is a 100%-owned operating subsidiary of the publicly listed Zyxel Group Corporation, which trades on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 3704. As of July 24, 2026, Zyxel Group's market cap was approximately NT$18.8 billion, per gurufocus.com.
Did Zyxel refuse to fix security vulnerabilities in its routers?
Yes. In February 2025 Zyxel publicly declined to patch end-of-life DSL CPE models (VMG/SBG series) against actively exploited zero-days including CVE-2024-40890 and CVE-2024-40891, telling customers to replace hardware instead, while some affected units were still for sale on Amazon, per TechCrunch, 2025-02-05.
How does the FCC foreign-router ban affect Zyxel?
A March 2026 FCC notice bars sale of new 'foreign-made' routers and cuts firmware update eligibility for existing devices after March 1, 2027. As of mid-April 2026 only Netgear had received an exemption; Taiwan-based Zyxel's status under the 'foreign-made' criteria remains unclarified, per CNET, 2026-04-14.
