Safe to Join Figma in 2026? What the Evidence Shows

Figma's July 2026 assessment: 46% revenue growth, 139% retention, an 80% stock drop, and the AI-native rivals to watch before joining.

The short version

Figma is one of the stranger records among the companies we assessed. The business is accelerating: Q1 2026 revenue of $333.4 million, up 46% year over year, with net dollar retention of 139%, the highest in more than two years. The stock, meanwhile, traded around $21.46 on July 22, 2026, down 80 to 87% from its post-IPO high, on fear of AI-native design tools. Anyone weighing a job offer in 2026 is really asking which of those two signals to believe.

Our July 2026 assessment placed Figma among the businesses holding their ground, though with real open questions about the AI-native threat. What follows is the evidence behind that reading and the dated items a candidate can check.

Where Figma sits in the assessment

Of the 165 design software (B8) companies assessed in July 2026, Figma showed less sign of customer defection than nearly all of its peers: net dollar retention reached 139% in Q1 2026 and revenue grew 46% year over year, even as AI-native rivals launched. Few companies in the broader 10,525-company July 2026 dataset have as clear a structural barrier against their closest incumbent: Adobe's roughly $20 billion attempt to acquire Figma collapsed in 2023 under regulatory pressure, and Adobe discontinued its own competing tool, XD, in 2024. Among the 12 companies in its closest comparison group, Figma stands out alongside Workspace for showing the least evidence of customers actually leaving.

Those numbers matter more than a stock chart: the real test of a competitive threat is whether customers are actually leaving, and as of July 2026 the evidence shows none, retention rose and revenue accelerated through the very quarters when the AI rivals launched.

The business numbers

FY2024 GAAP revenue was $749 million, up 48% year over year. Q4 2025 revenue reached $303.8 million, up 40%, with a 14% non-GAAP operating margin but a -64% GAAP operating margin. Q1 2026 came in at $333.4 million, up 46%, with 82% gross margin. Full-year 2026 guidance, issued May 14, 2026, calls for $1.422 to $1.428 billion in revenue, roughly 35% growth, with $125 to $135 million in non-GAAP operating income. Figma had roughly 690,000 paid customers and about $1.6 billion in cash as of June 2026, with named enterprise customers including Netflix, Airbnb, and Duolingo.

For an employee, the cash position and growth rate are the practical points: this is not a company under near-term financial strain. The GAAP loss is real, but guidance implies non-GAAP operating profit for the year.

The Adobe question is settled; the AI question is not

Adobe tried to buy Figma for roughly $20 billion, abandoned the deal in 2023 under regulatory pressure, and discontinued its rival tool XD in 2024. That fight is over. The live contest is with AI-native tools: Google Stitch, a free prompt-to-design tool launched March 18, 2026, and Anthropic's Claude Design, launched around April 2026. Figma's stock fell 12% in the two days after Stitch launched, and lost 44 to 52% in the first half of 2026 on AI-competition fears.

Figma's counter-move is to orchestrate frontier models rather than be replaced by one. It began charging for metered AI credits on March 18, 2026, acquired Weavy in October 2025 and relaunched it as Figma Weave, and its MCP integration grew weekly-active users 5x quarter over quarter in Q1 2026. Customers above $100K ARR who use Figma's MCP server expanded seats about 70% faster than non-users as of Q1 2026, per Figma's own May 2026 disclosure. Some figures, including the widely cited 70%+ market share among product designers (a 2024 survey cited secondhand), are vendor-adjacent or unverified.

What a candidate should actually watch

These are dated checkpoints, not conclusions:

  • August 5, 2026: Q2 2026 earnings. Guidance is $348 to $350 million. The key line is net dollar retention. NDR falling below 120%, or two consecutive quarters of enterprise seat contraction, would be a clear sign the AI-native rivals are winning share; NDR holding above 130% suggests the workflow lock-in is holding.
  • Q4 2026: Google Stitch's projected commercial launch. The first real test of whether a free, Gemini-backed tool converts paying Figma customers. Named enterprise defections would be the signal.
  • Around August 2026: insider lockup expiration of about 77.7 million shares. This can pressure the stock independent of business performance, which matters if your compensation is equity-heavy.
  • March 2026 securities-law investigation (Lowey Dannenberg, into IPO disclosures) and May 2026 activist pressure from Findell Capital are open governance items as of July 2026.
  • Governance structure: founder Dylan Field held roughly 74% of voting power via Class B supervoting shares as of July 2025. Employees have essentially no governance influence; whether that is a risk depends on your view of Field.

The equity math is the real risk

For most candidates the question is not whether Figma keeps operating; $1.6 billion in cash and 46% growth as of mid-2026 make near-term operations a non-issue. The question is equity value. Figma priced its IPO at $33 on July 30, 2025, opened at $85, touched $142.92 intraday, then traded near $21.46 a year later. That is a market repricing disruption risk before it shows up in the numbers. If you join in 2026, your strike or RSU value is set against a market cap of roughly $9 to $10 billion, which cuts both ways: the disruption fear is priced in, but so is the possibility that the fear proves right after Stitch's commercial launch.

How much to trust this assessment

In a blind backtest, we checked our assessment approach against 116 companies that later failed, using only facts that would have been knowable about 18 months before each one collapsed. That is not a promise about any single company, it is evidence the process tends to separate strained businesses from healthy ones when identity is hidden. Figma's own reading is not one-sided: the evidence supports a strong moat against Adobe, but it does not yet resolve the AI-native question, which is itself the honest state of play as of July 2026.

Questions this data answers

Is Figma losing customers to AI design tools in 2026? Not in the evidence through July 2026. Net dollar retention hit 139% in Q1 2026, a two-year high, and Q1 revenue grew 46% year over year, both improving after Google Stitch (March 2026) and Claude Design (April 2026) launched. The pressure so far is in the stock price and sentiment, not the customer numbers.

Is Figma profitable? Not on a GAAP basis. Q4 2025 showed a -64% GAAP operating margin alongside a 14% non-GAAP margin. FY2026 guidance issued May 14, 2026 projects $125 to $135 million in non-GAAP operating income on roughly $1.42 billion in revenue.

Why did Figma's stock fall so far after the IPO? Figma priced at $33 on July 30, 2025, opened at $85, and hit $142.92 intraday, then traded near $21.46 by July 22, 2026, down 80 to 87%. The decline tracks fear of AI-native rivals: shares fell 12% in two days after Google Stitch launched in March 2026, and 44 to 52% in the first half of 2026 overall.

Who is Figma's biggest competitive threat now? Not Adobe, whose roughly $20 billion acquisition attempt collapsed in 2023 and which discontinued XD in 2024. The live threats as of July 2026 are Google Stitch and Anthropic Claude Design, both shipped in spring 2026, with Stitch's commercial launch projected for Q4 2026.

What single number tells me if the moat is holding? Net dollar retention, reported quarterly, next on August 5, 2026. Above 130% would suggest workflow lock-in is holding; below 120%, or two straight quarters of enterprise seat contraction, would be the clearest sign AI-native rivals are winning share.

Assessments reflect evidence available July 2026. Companies change; treat watch-items as things to verify, not conclusions.
