Safe to Join Zoom in 2026? What the Evidence Shows
Zoom's July 2026 review: assessed as highly exposed to competitive pressure, 98.3% net revenue retention, hiring down 67.5%, and the exact numbers a job seeker should check.
The short answer
Zoom Video Communications (legally Zoom Communications, Inc. since November 2024) was assessed as being losing its protection in our July 2026 review of the company. That is not a declaration of an outcome. We never declare an outcome; the assessment method publishes dated watch-items you can verify yourself. What that standing reflects is a specific tension: a profitable, cash-generative company whose core product is being eroded, in measurable ways, by free bundled alternatives from Microsoft and Google.
This article walks through the evidence: the financial base, the pressure, the hiring picture, and the exact numbers to check before you accept an offer.
The company is financially healthy today
Start with what is solid. Zoom reported Q1 FY2027 revenue of $1.239 billion, up 5.5% year over year, with net income of $425.7 million, per its May 21, 2026 earnings release. Full-year FY2026 revenue was $4.87 billion, up 4.36%, and the company guided FY2027 revenue to $5.08 to $5.09 billion. Market cap sat around $26.3 billion as of July 22, 2026. The board authorized an additional $1.0 billion share buyback in May 2026.
There is also a windfall on the balance sheet: Zoom Ventures invested roughly $51 million in Anthropic in May 2023, and by May 22, 2026 that stake was reported at approximately $1.3 billion in value, an unrealized gain of over $1 billion. It is worth being precise here: that gain is a non-operating item subject to valuation swings, not evidence the operating business is accelerating.
None of this suggests a company at risk of missing payroll. If your only question is whether Zoom can pay you in 2027, the financials say yes.
Why the risk picture holds up
The problem is trajectory, not solvency. The single most important number behind that reading is net revenue retention: 98.3% in Q1 FY2027, reported May 21, 2026. Below 100% means existing customers are, in aggregate, spending less over time. Growth of 4 to 5% is coming entirely from new logos replacing shrinking accounts. Trailing four-quarter billings growth averaged about 4.8% year over year as of May 2026.
The named predator is not hypothetical. Microsoft Teams comes bundled into Microsoft 365 and Google Meet into Workspace, suites most organizations already pay for. Multiple third-party reviews from 2026 agree Teams and Meet win on cost for organizations already inside those ecosystems, and our assessment found Microsoft and Google are not blocked at all; they are actively winning share through bundling. Among its video-conferencing peers, Zoom's competitive standing looked weak in July 2026, though not the weakest: RingCentral reported the softest Q1 among tracked video-conferencing stocks that same month.
AI does not rescue the story either. Third-party transcription and note-taking tools like Tactiq work across Zoom, Teams, and Meet interchangeably as of June 2026, flattening the feature layer Zoom leaned on. Zoom launched AI Companion 3.0 on December 15, 2025, retired the AI Companion brand and launched ZoomMate on June 1, 2026, then fully launched ZoomMate plus an AI Productivity Suite in July 2026 with Salesforce, Jira, Slack, ServiceNow, and Workday integrations. Rapid rebranding inside seven months reads as unsettled product strategy. On the positive side, AI Companion paid users were up 184% year over year and My Notes reached 1.5 million licensed users within four months of launch, per the May 2026 earnings release.
What the hiring data says about joining
For a job seeker, the hiring signals matter as much as the revenue line. Company-reported headcount was 7,438 employees as of January 31, 2026, up just 0.35% year over year, after a 12.5% cut from 8,484 (FY2023) to 7,420 (FY2024). Revelio Labs estimated global headcount around 8,871 as of December 2025 (their methodology differs from company reporting), and estimated that active job postings fell 67.5% in 2025 versus 2024.
Zoom's active job postings fell 67.5% in 2025 versus 2024 while headcount stayed roughly flat at 7,438 employees as of January 31, 2026, per company and Revelio Labs data. That profile, flat headcount, sharply reduced hiring, and a large buyback, describes a company managing a mature franchise for margin, not scaling. Practically, that means fewer open roles, likely slower internal mobility, and compensation more dependent on a stock whose story hinges on retention numbers.
What holds the line for Zoom
Of the 165 companies in Zoom's category assessed in July 2026, Zoom's competitive moat was judged stronger than most in the group. The defensible part of the business is the multi-product enterprise base: Zoom Phone, Contact Center, Workvivo, and Docs wired into enterprise workflows are costlier to rip out than a meeting app. Zoom had 4,534 customers paying over $100,000 in trailing-twelve-month revenue as of May 21, 2026, up 8.2% year over year. That number growing while overall retention shrinks is the clearest sign the big-account bundle strategy has some traction, even as the broader base erodes.
The watch-items, dated, that settle this
We publish no forecasts, only checkable items:
- Q2 FY2027 earnings (quarter ended July 31, 2026): guidance was $1.26 to $1.27 billion revenue. Check whether net revenue retention stays below 100%. If NRR climbs back above 105% for two consecutive quarters, with Contact Center and Workvivo becoming the majority of net new revenue, that would be a strong signal the erosion has reversed. NRR breaking below 95% would signal the opposite.
- Microsoft Teams pricing and bundling moves: any Teams tier that makes Zoom Phone or Contact Center materially redundant is the sharpest downside signal.
- FY2027 full-year results (expected by March 2027): does revenue land in the guided $5.08 to $5.09 billion range?
- Anthropic stake valuation: further appreciation or markdown will swing reported non-operating income and can distort headline profit either way.
Questions this data answers
Is Zoom profitable in 2026? Yes. Zoom reported net income of $425.7 million on revenue of $1.239 billion for fiscal Q1 2027 (quarter ended April 30, 2026), per its May 21, 2026 release. Full-year FY2026 revenue was $4.87 billion, up 4.36%.
Is Zoom losing customers to Microsoft Teams? Zoom's net revenue retention was 98.3% in Q1 FY2027 (reported May 21, 2026), meaning existing customers are spending less in aggregate. Reviewers and analysts attribute this partly to Teams and Meet being bundled free into Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, and our July 2026 assessment placed Zoom among the most exposed companies in its 165-company category to this kind of competitive pressure.
Is Zoom hiring in 2026? Slowly. Headcount was 7,438 as of January 31, 2026, up just 0.35% year over year, and Revelio Labs estimated active job postings fell 67.5% in 2025 versus 2024. Expect fewer open roles than the brand's visibility suggests.
What is Zoom's biggest strength right now? Its high-value enterprise base: 4,534 customers over $100K in trailing-twelve-month revenue as of May 21, 2026, up 8.2% year over year, locked in via Phone, Contact Center, and Workvivo. It also holds an Anthropic stake valued around $1.3 billion as of May 2026, up from a $51 million 2023 investment.
What single number should a candidate check before joining? Net revenue retention in the Q2 FY2027 report (quarter ended July 31, 2026). Above 100% for consecutive quarters would show the multi-product bundle offsetting core erosion; a slide toward 95% would show it accelerating.
Bottom line
Zoom in mid-2026 is a solvent, profitable company under active, measurable competitive erosion. Joining is not a bet on payroll; it is a bet on whether the Phone, Contact Center, and Workvivo bundle grows faster than the core meetings business shrinks. The retention and billings figures over the next two to three quarters, starting with the report on the quarter ended July 31, 2026, are the evidence to check yourself.
