The call

Almaviva's grip on Italian sovereign IT work is intact for now, but a major breach investigation and rising debt from the Tivit deal are both live and unresolved.

Almaviva runs computer services and customer-service centers for European governments and large companies, especially in Italy. It is hard to replace in sensitive government work because Italian and EU law favor local, trusted vendors for things like state railways and defense projects, but a massive cyberattack in November 2025 that stole data from a major client now threatens that advantage. Big global rivals like Accenture and Capgemini cannot easily grab this work due to security rules, and AI chatbots are already shrinking Almaviva's lower-margin call-center business, but what matters most over the next six months is whether the Italian government and its clients stay loyal after the breach, or punish the company for the security failure.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI voice and chat agents used across the BPO industry. Almaviva Experience headcount fell 14% since 2023 as AI-driven contact center automation replaces call staff in Italy and Brazil. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Accenture, Capgemini, IBM, Cognizant, Sopra Steria, Atos. These firms bid hard for ordinary enterprise IT work but are blocked from Italian sovereign and defense contracts by clearance rules. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Security clearance and nationality rules on Italian critical infrastructure and EU sovereignty projects keep foreign and uncleared rivals out of the core business.
What would change this call
ACN, Garante, or Postal Police issue findings or fines on the Nov 2025 breach within 6 months. Would show whether the sovereign-IT trust moat is weakening after the data theft.
Ferrovie dello Stato or EU digital-euro consortium publicly reduces or ends Almaviva's contract scope. Would confirm a marquee sovereign client is exiting due to the breach.
Group leverage reported above 4x or Tivit writedown disclosed in 2026 financials. Would show the Brazil acquisition is straining the balance sheet despite revenue growth.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue €1.8B, up 24.5% pro-forma (2026-04-23)
  • Adjusted EBITDA margin 19.6% (2026-04-23)
  • 2.3TB stolen from railway client in Nov 2025 breach (2025-12-07)
Named risks
  • November 2025 cyberattack (2.3TB stolen) under active ACN, Garante and Postal Police investigation could bring fines or client losses. Severity: high
  • Adjusted leverage at 3.05x post-Tivit acquisition creates refinancing exposure if organic EBITDA stalls. Severity: medium
  • AI-driven headcount erosion in Brazilian BPO segment (-14% since 2023) signals shrinking core business line. Severity: medium
  • Integration of largest-ever acquisition Tivit still executing amid pending regulatory approvals. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Almaviva profitable in 2026?
Yes. Almaviva reported FY2025 adjusted EBITDA of €345 million on €1.8 billion revenue, a 19.6% margin, up 25.7% year over year, according to its own April 23, 2026 results reported by Il Sole 24 Ore.
Could AI replace Almaviva's workforce?
Partly. Almaviva's Brazilian BPO/contact-center unit, Almaviva Experience, shrank from 14,414 employees in 2023 to 12,395 in 2025, a 14% drop tied to AI automation, per Revelio Labs data from June 2026. Its sovereign government IT work is harder to automate away.
Who owns Almaviva?
Almaviva is privately held and family-owned, per its own statements to Il Sole 24 Ore in April 2026. It fully absorbed its once-listed AI unit Almawave via a squeeze-out completed December 18, 2025, reaching 97.91% ownership and delisting it from Euronext Growth Milan.
Who is Almaviva's biggest competitor?
Domestically, Reply S.p.A. (about $2.8-2.9 billion revenue, 17,000 employees) competes closely. Pan-European giants like Capgemini, Sopra Steria, and Atos contest general IT work but are structurally barred from Italian sovereign and EU tech-sovereignty contracts Almaviva holds.
How much debt does Almaviva carry after the Tivit deal?
Almaviva's adjusted leverage stood at 3.05x with €294.7 million available cash as of its FY2025 results reported April 23, 2026, following financing that included €350 million in senior secured notes due 2030 plus a €230 million revolver for the Tivit acquisition closed in July 2025.
Is Almaviva growing or shrinking?
Group revenue grew to €1.8 billion in FY2025, up 24.5% pro-forma year over year per its own April 2026 reporting, driven heavily by acquisitions like Tivit and Iteris. Core Italian headcount rose only 0.9% in 2025 while job postings there fell 12.5%, per Revelio Labs.
