The call

Patent licensing cash keeps Qualcomm alive while phone chip share slips to MediaTek and its Nvidia challenger stays two years from shipping.

Qualcomm sells chips for smartphones and tablets, and makes money by licensing wireless technology to other companies. The licensing business is highly profitable and protected by law, so it will keep generating cash for years. However, phone chip sales are dropping because a rival called MediaTek is winning customers, and Qualcomm's bet on data-center chips to compete with Nvidia faces an uphill climb since Nvidia already dominates that market with established relationships and proven technology. The biggest wildcard is a lawsuit Qualcomm filed against a company called Arm in January 2026 over chip design licensing terms, if Qualcomm loses, it would have to rebuild its entire strategy for personal computers, high-end phones, and data centers in the middle of that competition.

Why
01
AI pressure: Nvidia data center AI accelerators. Qualcomm's AI250 data center chip is roadmap only, sampling targeted mid 2027, while Nvidia already ships and dominates. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: MediaTek. Handset revenue fell 13% year over year as MediaTek takes share in Chinese phone chips. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Patent licensing on cellular standards (QTL) keeps printing cash at 72% margin, funding the data center bet.
What would change this call
Q3 FY2026 earnings (~July 29, 2026) handset revenue trend. shows whether MediaTek-driven handset erosion is stabilizing or worsening.
Qualcomm v. Arm Ltd. Delaware litigation ruling. adverse outcome would threaten Oryon CPU licensing underpinning PC and data-center roadmap.
AI250 data-center chip sampling progress toward mid-2027 target. delay would indicate Qualcomm falling further behind Nvidia's entrenched position.
Key numbers
  • Q2 FY2026 handset revenue down 13% YoY (2026-04-29)
  • QTL licensing margin 72% on $1.4B revenue (2026-04-29)
  • Automotive revenue up 38% YoY to $1.33B (2026-04-29)
Named risks
  • Handset revenue decline (-13% YoY as of April 2026) tied to memory shortages and Chinese OEM caution. Severity: high
  • Qualcomm v. Arm Ltd. litigation could disrupt Oryon CPU licensing underpinning PC and data-center roadmap. Severity: high

Questions people ask
Is Qualcomm profitable in 2026?
Yes. Qualcomm reported FY2025 (ended September 28, 2025) net income of $5.541B on revenue of $44.28B. Fiscal Q2 2026 revenue was $10.6B with non-GAAP EPS of $2.65, beating estimates, though revenue was down 3.5% year over year on handset weakness.
Is Qualcomm losing to MediaTek in smartphone chips?
Yes, on unit share. MediaTek held about 32% of global smartphone chipset share in Q1 2026 versus Qualcomm's roughly 23%, per Counterpoint data cited June 27, 2026. Qualcomm's handset revenue also fell 13% year over year in fiscal Q2 2026 to $6.02B.
Can Qualcomm compete with Nvidia in AI data centers?
Qualcomm is a late entrant. It unveiled its Dragonfly AI200/AI250 accelerators in October 2025 and a fuller data-center roadmap (C1000 CPU, AI300, HBC memory) at its June 24, 2026 Investor Day, but commercial availability runs 2027-2028, well behind Nvidia's shipped, CUDA-entrenched dominance.
Who owns Qualcomm?
Qualcomm is a fully public company (NASDAQ: QCOM) with no parent, publicly traded since its 1991 IPO. Vanguard is among its largest disclosed institutional holders, per a July 14, 2026 profile. The board approved a new $20 billion stock buyback authorization in April 2026.
Could AI replace Qualcomm's business?
Unlikely for its core moat. Qualcomm's standards-essential patent licensing (QTL) generated 72% EBT margins in Q2 FY2026 and is legally insulated from AI substitution. However, AI-driven demand is shifting value toward accelerators where Nvidia dominates, pressuring Qualcomm's legacy handset chip business, down 13% YoY as of April 29, 2026.
What is Qualcomm's biggest competitive threat?
Two fronts: MediaTek leads mobile chipset unit share (32% vs Qualcomm's 23% in Q1 2026) and Nvidia dominates the AI data-center accelerator market Qualcomm is now entering with Dragonfly chips not commercially available until 2027-2028.
