The call

Micron sells the memory that AI data centers can't get enough of, but SK Hynix leads HBM and China's CXMT is climbing fast in commodity chips.

Micron makes computer memory chips (DRAM and NAND) used in data centers, phones, and AI servers. The company owns factories in the U.S., holds tens of thousands of patents, and has locked-in customer contracts covering more than half of next year's sales, making it genuinely hard for rivals to replace. However, Chinese competitor CXMT is growing fast with government money and taking market share, South Korea's SK Hynix already leads in the most advanced memory chips for AI, and the stock price has tripled in one year, leaving little room for error if demand slows or competitors break into the highest-end products.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI training and inference demand is filling Micron's order book, not replacing it; HBM4 revenue already tops $1 billion. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SK Hynix and China's CXMT. SK Hynix holds ~57% of HBM share to Micron's ~21%, while CXMT tripled its DRAM share to ~8% with state backing. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Fabs, patents, and take-or-pay Strategic Customer Agreements covering over half of forward revenue lock in buyers for years.
What would change this call
CXMT ships qualified HBM to any Western hyperscaler. Would show China has broken into leading-edge memory, not just commodity DRAM.
SK Hynix reports HBM share gains or new hyperscaler wins after its July 29, 2026 earnings. Would show Micron losing ground in the highest-margin AI memory segment.
Micron's take-or-pay contract book shrinks or gets renegotiated in FQ4-26 or later results. Would show demand pull-forward reversing and pricing power weakening.
