Balaji Telefilms Limited
Indian TV and streaming producer behind Naagin and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, run by Ekta Kapoor.
Balaji still owns famous names in Indian television, but its digital bet got banned, its revenue halved, and the platforms it now depends on hold the pricing power.
Balaji Telefilms makes TV shows and web series, mainly for Indian audiences, and owns famous show names like Naagin. For years it was hard to replace because Ekta Kapoor's name and those old hits gave it power in deals. But now Netflix, JioHotstar, and Amazon make their own shows instead of buying from Balaji, which means the company gets worse payment terms and less work. Its streaming app ALTT was shut down by the government in July 2025 for content rules, wiping out about 900 crore rupees in value. The company lost half its sales and is now losing money every quarter. The thing that could matter most is whether Reliance, which owns JioHotstar and is also Balaji's biggest investor, keeps backing the company or walks away. If the company can stop the losses and get new deals with the big platforms in the next few months, it might survive; if not, it could shrink to almost nothing.
Q1 FY27 results (~August 2026) show widening rather than stabilizing losses. Would confirm the digital reset and content cost pressures are structural, not temporary.
Kutingg or a successor platform faces new regulatory action or ban. Would show the ALTT-style obscenity/regulatory risk remains uncontrolled.
- Q4 FY26 revenue fell to Rs47.6cr from Rs66.3cr a year earlier
- Reliance's stake cut to 21.07% from 24.82%
- ALTT streaming app banned by government in July 2025
- Regulatory crackdown on OTT content could hit Kutingg or successor platforms as it did ALTT in July 2025.
- Revenue collapse (-53% FY26) and swing to net loss signal ongoing financial deterioration.
- Reliance Industries continuing to trim its strategic stake, currently 21.07%, could signal weakening alignment with JioHotstar.
- Formulaic serial and soap content core to Balaji's legacy business is directly exposed to AI-assisted scripting and production tools.
- No structural moat against platform giants that can in-house production or shift spend to rival studios.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix / JioHotstar / Amazon Prime Video | losing to | Platforms hold commissioning power and can in-house production, reducing Balaji to vendor status as of 2026 |
| Dharma Productions | losing to | Dharma secured ₹1,000cr stake sale to Adar Poonawalla in 2024, outpacing Balaji's capital position |
| Shemaroo Entertainment | contesting | Shemaroo posts ₹5.83B TTM revenue as of July 2026, more than 2x Balaji's FY26 revenue |
| Applause Entertainment / Banijay Asia | gaining on | OTT-first commissioning studios reshaping Indian streaming market as of 2026 |
- Is Balaji Telefilms profitable in 2026?
- No. Balaji Telefilms posted a FY26 consolidated net loss of ₹45.49 crore (year ended March 31, 2026), reversing a FY25 net profit of ₹90.59 crore, as revenue fell about 53% to ₹210.83 crore, per its annual results filed May 27, 2026.
- Why did Balaji Telefilms shut down ALTT?
- India's Ministry of Information & Broadcasting banned ALTT in July 2025 over alleged obscenity, part of a crackdown on 25 OTT platforms. Balaji had invested ₹795 crore plus ₹103 crore in loans into ALTT, which had a pre-ban enterprise valuation of ₹1,209 crore.
- Is Reliance still backing Balaji Telefilms?
- Reliance Industries remains the largest non-promoter shareholder but has been trimming its position, cutting its stake from 24.82% to 21.07% as of the FY25 filing dated September 24, 2025, after first investing ₹413 crore in 2017.
- Who is Balaji Telefilms' biggest competitor?
- Balaji competes with Dharma Productions, Yash Raj Films, Red Chillies Entertainment and Shemaroo, but the bigger threat is commissioning platforms like Netflix, JioHotstar and Amazon Prime Video, which now hold pricing power over vendor studios like Balaji.
- Could AI replace Balaji Telefilms' content production?
- Balaji's high-volume formulaic TV soaps (its historic K-series model, e.g. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) are exposed to AI-assisted scripting, dubbing and VFX tools, while its prestige, creator-driven work tied to Ekta Kapoor's brand is more insulated, as of 2026.
- What is Balaji Telefilms' Netflix deal?
- Balaji renewed its creative partnership with Netflix in June 2025 for films and series via Balaji Motion Pictures and Balaji Telefilms Digital; reality show Lock Upp moved to Netflix (announced February 2026) with two new web series in development as of April 2026.
