The call

Comcast still owns the pipes and the profits, but broadband and video subscribers are leaving for converged rivals while the company prepares to split into two firms by mid-2027.

Comcast is a huge cable company that brings internet, TV, and phone service to millions of homes through wires it owns and maintains. That physical network is hard to build from scratch, which protects Comcast from disappearing overnight. But AT&T and Verizon are winning customers by combining fiber internet with cell phone plans, T-Mobile is offering internet without wires, and Starlink is beaming internet from space, so Comcast is losing internet customers right now even with its advantage. The company is also splitting in two by mid-2027, which means two different companies will have to compete separately, making the next few years harder to predict.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product replaces last-mile cable pipes; rising AI/cloud traffic mostly adds demand for Comcast's network capacity. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: AT&T and Verizon converged fiber/mobile bundles, T-Mobile fixed wireless, Starlink. Comcast lost 65,000 internet subscribers and 322,000 video subscribers in Q1 2026 as rivals' bundles and fixed wireless spread. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Owns the physical cable/fiber plant, pole rights, and regulatory relationships across its footprint that rivals can't instantly duplicate.
What would change this call
Comcast reports broadband subscriber net-adds for two straight quarters. Would show the losses to AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Starlink have stopped.
Q2 2026 earnings (July 23, 2026) broadband and video subscriber counts versus Q1 2026's 65,000 and 322,000 losses. Shows whether customer defection to rivals is accelerating or slowing.
NBCUniversal/Sky spin-off closes on schedule by mid-2027 with separate standalone financials. Confirms the structural split proceeds as planned rather than stalling.

Questions people ask
Is Comcast profitable in 2026?
Yes. FY2025 net income was $20 billion on $123.7 billion revenue. Q1 2026 EPS hit $0.79, beating estimates, but analysts forecast Q2 2026 EPS down 22.4% YoY to $0.97, signaling margin pressure heading into July 23, 2026 earnings.
Is Comcast splitting into two companies?
Yes. On June 29, 2026 Comcast announced a tax-free spin-off separating NBCUniversal and Sky from its connectivity business, expected to close mid-2027. Mike Cavanagh leads the media entity; Michael Angelakis returns as CEO of standalone Comcast.
Is Comcast losing broadband customers to AT&T and Verizon?
Yes. Comcast lost 65,000 internet subscribers in Q1 2026 as AT&T and Verizon converged fiber-mobile bundles reached 26% of US households by Q2 2026, though industry-wide losses (280,000) improved from 320,000 a year earlier.
Could AI replace Comcast customer service jobs?
Partially. Comcast already uses LLM/RAG tools to assist live agents and agentic AI for network fault detection as of September 2025, but physical last-mile cable/fiber plant and regulated pole rights remain AI-resistant and central to the business.
Is Peacock making money for Comcast?
Not yet. Peacock posted a $432 million loss in Q1 2026 despite crossing $2 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time, and has lost over $10 billion cumulatively since its 2020 launch, per a May 11, 2026 report.
Who owns Comcast?
Comcast trades publicly as CMCSA. Chairman Brian L. Roberts holds only about 1% of equity but controls 33% of voting power through Class B shares, as of Comcast's 2025 annual report filed February 2026.
