The call

Paramount Skydance has real IP and sports rights but stays subscale and unprofitable unless the contested Warner Bros. Discovery deal closes.

Paramount Skydance is a movie and TV company that streams shows, runs cable channels, and owns the rights to Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, plus NFL games. It has real advantages because those TV licenses and sports contracts are hard to get, and Netflix and Disney cannot easily replace them, but the company is losing money on streaming and is too small to compete on its own. Everything depends on a planned merger with Warner Bros. Discovery that courts are currently blocking, set to be decided in August 2026. If that deal goes through, Paramount becomes big enough to fight Netflix and Disney. If the courts kill it, Paramount stays small and in trouble, and AI tools that make cheaper commercials and special effects will eat away at profits even more.

Why
01
AI pressure: Runway Agent 2.0, Google Gemini Omni Flash. AI tools are cutting ad-creative and VFX/post costs, squeezing margins but not touching the IP library or NFL/UFC rights. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime Video. Netflix has 300M+ profitable subscribers, Disney has 219.8M combined, both dwarfing Paramount+'s 79.6M and its -$497M DTC loss. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Century-old IP library, FCC broadcast licenses, and live NFL/UFC rights that rivals cannot easily replicate.

Questions people ask
Is Paramount Skydance profitable in 2026?
Not on the streaming side: Paramount+ posted a full-year 2025 loss of about $497 million, and Q4 2025 showed a $339 million operating loss including roughly $500 million in merger restructuring charges, per Britannica reporting as of July 13, 2026.
Will the Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery merger actually close?
Uncertain. Paramount agreed to the ~$110 billion WBD deal on February 27, 2026 and got DOJ clearance June 12, 2026, but 12 state AGs sued to block it July 13, 2026, and Paramount voluntarily delayed closing to mid-August 2026 pending a judge's ruling.
Is Paramount Skydance laying off workers?
Yes. Paramount announced about 2,000 job cuts (roughly 10% of staff) starting October 29, 2025, with roughly 1,000 let go immediately, followed by a WARN filing for about 197 more Hollywood-area jobs on November 7, 2025.
Who owns Paramount Skydance?
David Ellison is Chairman and CEO after the August 7, 2025 merger of Skydance and Paramount Global. His father Larry Ellison put in roughly $6 billion personally, alongside RedBird Capital Partners as a long-term strategic investor, per Wikipedia as of July 15, 2026.
How does Paramount+ compare to Netflix in subscribers?
Far smaller: Paramount+ had 79.6 million paid subscribers as of Q1 2026 versus Netflix's 301 to 325 million and Disney's combined 219.8 million, according to TheWrap's May 11, 2026 streaming comparison.
Could AI replace what Paramount Skydance does?
AI is automating ad creative and VFX or post-production labor, including Paramount's own Precision+ and Creative Express tools shown in Q1 2026 results, but it cannot replicate the company's century-old IP library, FCC broadcast licenses, or live sports rights like the NFL and UFC.
