The call

Collabora's real fight isn't Microsoft or AI, it's a widening split with the Document Foundation and rivals like OnlyOffice and Euro-Office over the same open-source codebase.

Collabora makes office software that runs on European servers instead of the cloud, which appeals to governments and companies that need to keep data at home and avoid U.S. rules. It is hard for Microsoft or Google to compete here because of law and their own business models, but Collabora's real problem is not them: it is The Document Foundation, the group that owns the underlying code Collabora builds on. The Document Foundation removed Collabora's staff membership in April 2026 and started building its own competing version, which directly threatens Collabora's credibility and product roadmap. The one thing that could change everything is whether Collabora and The Document Foundation can patch up their relationship or whether they split apart permanently, taking the codebase with them.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI writing tools don't touch the self-hosted, sovereign-document niche Collabora sells into; no AI agent is replacing government document infrastructure. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Both stay cloud-first and can't easily match EU sovereignty rules, but they keep courting the same government buyers Collabora needs. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. EU sovereignty rules push governments toward self-hosted, non-US-cloud software, a lane Microsoft and Google structurally can't occupy.
What would change this call
TDF and Collabora either reconcile or the LibreOffice Online codebase permanently forks by late 2026. Shows whether Collabora's core technical foundation stays stable or becomes isolated and harder to maintain.
Nextcloud sets Euro-Office as its default document engine instead of Collabora. Would signal loss of Collabora's main distribution channel to a rival consortium.
French ministries or Germany's openDesk program renew or switch away from Collabora contracts. Tests whether Collabora keeps its flagship EU government anchor accounts or loses them to OnlyOffice or Euro-Office.

Questions people ask
Is Collabora Productivity profitable?
Collabora is privately held and discloses no audited financials or profitability figures. Third-party revenue estimates exist but are aggregator-derived and unverified. As of July 2026 there is no public evidence confirming profit or loss for the UK-based office suite maker.
Who owns Collabora Productivity?
Collabora Productivity Ltd is a division of Collabora Ltd, a Cambridge, UK open-source consultancy founded in 2005 by Robert McQueen and Robert Taylor. It has no disclosed VC or PE ownership. On 28 May 2025 it merged with German consultancy allotropia software GmbH.
Could AI replace Collabora Online?
Unlikely to replace it outright. Collabora's moat is self-hosted, EU-sovereign document infrastructure, not AI features. It added bring-your-own-model AI assistance to Writer/Calc/Impress in Collabora Office 26.04 on 6 July 2026, treating AI as a plug-in ingredient rather than its core product.
Who is Collabora Productivity's biggest competitor?
Trade outlet FOSS Force named Euro-Office, a 2026 fork backed by Nextcloud, IONOS, and Proton, as 'Collabora's biggest competitor, especially in the EU' on 8 July 2026. OnlyOffice and The Document Foundation's revived LibreOffice Online are also direct rivals.
Is it risky to work at or with Collabora Productivity right now?
There is active turmoil: The Document Foundation revoked TDF membership from over 30 Collabora staff and partners in April 2026 amid a governance rift, while Collabora says it still employs seven of LibreOffice's top ten all-time core committers as of July 2026.
Did Collabora Productivity have layoffs?
No layoffs are reported in public sources. Instead, Collabora added staff via its 28 May 2025 merger with allotropia software GmbH, a German LibreOffice consultancy, though no precise headcount change was disclosed.
