The call

Omnicom is now the biggest ad company on paper, but it's cutting tens of thousands of jobs and betting on an unproven AI platform to prove the bigger size actually works.

Omnicom is a giant holding company that owns hundreds of advertising and marketing agencies worldwide, helping companies create ads and buy media time. The job is getting harder because Google, Meta, Amazon, and other tech platforms now let companies buy ads directly without needing Omnicom in the middle, and artificial intelligence can now do much of the creative work and ad-buying that used to require lots of human workers. Omnicom is cutting 23,000 jobs and trying to build new AI tools and a customer data platform called Acxiom to stay valuable, but whether these tools work better than what competitors like Publicis have built will determine if the company can hold onto profits and growth over the next year or two.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI agents automating creative production and media-buying (in-house tools plus rivals' platforms). Omnicom cut thousands of production jobs using its own AI agents, but the same automation lets clients or platforms bypass agencies entirely. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google, Meta, Amazon, and The Trade Desk capturing digital ad spend directly. These platforms already take roughly 80% of digital ad dollars, buying and optimizing campaigns without needing an agency in between. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Acxiom's identity data plus the new Omni platform lock in large clients who need cross-channel measurement and creative production at scale.
What would change this call
Omnicom reports organic growth in Q2/Q3 2026 earnings (post-merger clean quarters). Shows whether growth is real or just merger-driven revenue addition.
A top-10 Omnicom client publicly moves media buying in-house or goes platform-direct. Would confirm platform disintermediation is actively taking share.
Publicis reports faster organic growth or larger Epsilon/LiveRamp identity wins than Omnicom's Omni/Acxiom in 2026. Would show Omnicom losing ground to its closest holdco rival.
