The call

Crunchyroll keeps growing subscribers on the back of Sony's licensing access, while internal restructuring and legal exposure add noise around the edges.

Crunchyroll buys and streams anime shows, mostly from Japanese studios. The reason it is hard to copy is that Sony (Crunchyroll's owner) has deep relationships with Japanese production companies, which means Crunchyroll gets new shows faster and more reliably than Netflix can. Netflix treats anime as one type of show among many, not a specialty. AI tools can help with subtitles and dubbing in the future, but they cannot replace the core advantage: the connections to get the shows in the first place. The main thing to watch is whether Sony stays committed to Crunchyroll as its own brand or folds it into a bigger Sony streaming service. Right now the company is also dealing with layoffs and legal problems, which make the workplace feel unstable even though the business itself is growing.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI dubbing/subtitling tools. AI can cut localization labor costs but has already caused dub and caption quality complaints from fans. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Netflix. Netflix treats anime as one genre among many but keeps buying more of it, without Sony's production-committee access. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Sony/Aniplex sit inside Japanese production committees, giving Crunchyroll first access to simulcast rights rivals can't buy their way into.
What would change this call
Crunchyroll reports subscriber count for two consecutive quarters after any price hike. Would show whether growth is stalling or holding despite pricing pressure.
Sony announces Crunchyroll folded into a broader Sony streaming brand or platform. Would show erosion of standalone brand commitment cited as a career and moat risk.
Crunchyroll announces a third layoff round outside e-commerce or HR within 6 months. Would show sustained internal instability rather than one-off reallocation.

Questions people ask
Is Crunchyroll profitable in 2026?
Global Crunchyroll profitability is not separately disclosed, but its Japan branch (a production entity, not the whole business) saw net profit fall 63% to 453 million yen for fiscal year ending December 2025. Parent Sony's Media Networks group, which includes Crunchyroll, grew revenue 13% to $3.17 billion in fiscal 2025.
Who owns Crunchyroll?
Crunchyroll is a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex, a Sony Music Entertainment Japan subsidiary. Sony's Funimation Global Group completed its $1.175 billion acquisition of Crunchyroll from AT&T on August 9, 2021, later renaming the merged entity Crunchyroll, LLC in March 2022.
Could AI replace Crunchyroll's business?
Unlikely to replace the core business. Crunchyroll's moat is Sony/Aniplex's production-committee licensing access and its catalog, not AI-replicable. But localization is exposed: Crunchyroll was caught using ChatGPT-derived subtitles in July 2025 and AI closed captions in November 2025, prompting the CEO to publicly rule out AI subs/dubs in May 2026.
Is Netflix beating Crunchyroll in anime?
Not on dedicated anime subscribers, where Crunchyroll leads with 21 million as of May 2026, but Netflix reports (as of May 2026) that 50% of its global viewers watch anime and it is investing heavily in anime originals, making it Crunchyroll's largest cross-platform threat.
Has Crunchyroll had layoffs recently?
Yes, twice within eight months. Crunchyroll cut jobs in August 2025 amid a shift toward international markets like India and Brazil, while claiming 100+ open roles, then made a second, smaller round in March 2026 hitting HR and e-commerce staff during a strategy shift.
How many subscribers does Crunchyroll have?
Crunchyroll reached 21 million paid subscribers as of May 8, 2026, up from about 17 million a year earlier, a roughly 24% year-over-year increase, according to the company's own announcement covered by Anime News Network.
