The call

Econocom's leasing and logistics relationships keep it alive for now, but its slow-growing services arm is the part AI and cloud giants are most likely to squeeze first.

Econocom rents and services computer equipment to businesses and governments across Europe, handling the logistics of getting old gear back and refurbished. It is harder to replace than a pure rental shop because it manages complex supply chains and has long-standing relationships with government buyers, but Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud can bundle financing into their own cloud deals, and software that automates how companies buy equipment is shrinking what Econocom can charge. The real test is whether its services business (repairs, consulting, setup) can grow fast enough to offset the steady decline in profits from basic equipment rental as customers move to the cloud.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven procurement automation tools. Automated procurement software could let clients self-serve fleet buying, cutting Econocom's role as a tender middleman. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud. Hyperscalers bundling device lifecycle management into cloud contracts could bypass Econocom for large accounts. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Multi-vendor neutrality, reverse logistics network, and long public-sector tender relationships that are hard to copy fast.
What would change this call
Services segment growth rate in H1/H2 2026 results. Flat or negative growth shows the value-add offset to commodity margin compression is failing.
A hyperscaler (AWS, Azure, GCP) wins a European public-sector multi-vendor device-lifecycle tender. Would show hyperscalers can disintermediate Econocom's tender relationships directly.
Resolution of the discontinued unit sale process and any further associated charges. Shows whether the €46.8m loss was a one-off or points to deeper structural weakness.

Questions people ask
Is Econocom Group profitable in 2025?
Yes. Net profit from continuing operations rose 43% to 53.2 million euros for fiscal year 2025 (ended December 31, 2025). Total net profit was only 6.4 million euros because a discontinued operation booked a roughly 46.8 million euro loss tied to an ongoing divestment sale process.
Who owns Econocom Group?
Founder Jean-Louis Bouchard controls Econocom. As of May 16, 2024, Bouchard and his holding vehicle Econocom International BV held 65.03% of voting rights, making it a founder-controlled company despite its 1986 Euronext Brussels listing under ticker ECONB.
Could AI replace Econocom Group?
Unlikely to replace it outright. AI-driven procurement automation and hyperscaler bundling threaten Econocom's commodity hardware and leasing margins, but its financing balance sheet, multi-vendor neutrality, and refurbishment logistics (about 750,000 devices refurbished in 2025) are harder to automate away.
Is Econocom Group cutting jobs?
No mass layoffs are reported. Group headcount was approximately 8,680 employees across 16 countries as of December 31, 2025, roughly stable versus 2024, though management said it grew its sales force over 20% since 2024 by adding 50-plus agents in 2025.
Who is Econocom Group's biggest competitor?
Direct peers in IT leasing and workplace services include Grenke, Computacenter, Bechtle and CDW, all similarly-sized European players competing on multi-vendor financing and managed services, per competitive analyses current as of 2026.
Is Econocom Group growing?
Growth is slowing. FY2025 revenue rose 4.3% to 2,923 million euros (as of December 31, 2025), but on February 10, 2026 the company cut its prior 4 billion euro 2028 revenue target to just 2-3% annual growth for 2026-2028, citing a challenging tech market.
