The call

Fabric has working robots and known customers but no fresh capital in over four years while bigger players match its AI features.

Fabric builds physical robots that move inventory around in warehouses for large companies. It is hard to replace because the robots are already installed at customers and switching costs are high, but AutoStore, Dematic, and Amazon have much larger market share and deeper pockets to build the same technology. The company has not raised new funding since 2020 and has cut staff twice, which makes it vulnerable to being bought out at a low price or running out of cash, and even if its new AI software called Orchestra works well, it does not give the company a unique advantage that competitors cannot also copy.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI orchestration features from AutoStore, Exotec, and Dematic. Rivals now ship the same AI slotting and predictive-maintenance tools Fabric just launched as Orchestra, erasing its edge. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AutoStore, Dematic/KION, and Amazon. AutoStore already holds most of the cube storage market and Dematic has Nvidia backing, while Fabric hasn't raised money since 2021. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Live grocery deployments with Walmart, Save A Lot, and Uber give Fabric real-world data the giants don't yet have in this niche.

Fabric announces a new equity round within 6 months. Shows whether it can fund capex-heavy operations or faces a down-round.
Walmart, FreshDirect, or Super-Pharm publicly expand or quietly drop Fabric installations. Reveals whether named customers are staying or defecting to rivals.
AutoStore, Exotec, or Dematic announce AI orchestration features matching or beating Orchestra. Confirms Fabric's 2025 AI launch is not a lasting differentiator.

Questions people ask
Is Fabric profitable in 2026?
Fabric has not disclosed revenue or profit figures. It has raised no new funding since its $200M Series C in October 2021 and cut staff twice (2022, 2024), suggesting cash-flow strain rather than confirmed profitability as of July 2026.
Has Fabric had layoffs?
Yes. Fabric cut about 40% of staff (~120 people) in July 2022 during a strategy pivot, and cut roughly 15% (~30 people) again in April 2024, per TechCrunch and Calcalistech reporting.
Could AI replace Fabric's technology?
Fabric's physical robotics and fulfillment centers resist direct AI replacement, but its September 9, 2025 Orchestra AI-orchestration software is being matched by rivals like AutoStore and Dematic, eroding its software differentiation.
Who owns Fabric (getfabric.com)?
Fabric is privately held and venture-backed, with no parent company. Its Series C investors (Oct 2021) included Temasek, CPP Investments, Koch Disruptive Technologies and Princeville Capital, at a valuation over $1 billion.
Is Fabric's biggest competitor AutoStore?
AutoStore is the dominant installed-base leader in cube-based ASRS, while Fabric was ranked in the 'Mainstream' tier (not Market Leader) by ABI Research in March 2022, alongside Ocado and Exotec.
Has Fabric raised new funding recently?
No. Fabric's last confirmed funding round was a $200M Series C in October 2021 led by Temasek and CPP Investments, bringing lifetime funding to $336M. No new round had been reported as of July 2026.
