Goldwind
Goldwind is China's top wind turbine maker and the world's #1 by volume.
Goldwind leads the world in wind turbine volume, but thin margins and aggressive Chinese rivals keep its financial footing shaky despite the top spot.
Goldwind makes giant wind turbines and sells more of them than any other company in the world. The business is hard to copy because Goldwind has built massive factories and owns special technology, plus it has government backing in China that gives it first access to big orders. But three problems at once are creating real risk: Chinese competitors like Envision and Mingyang make nearly identical turbines and are willing to sell them cheaper, which is shrinking Goldwind's profit on each sale; the U.S. government is adding Goldwind to export blacklists, which could block sales to Western countries; and Goldwind makes most of its money from turbines alone, so if that business stays under pressure, the company cannot easily grow profits even if it stays number one. The one thing that could save the picture is if Goldwind's business outside China grows fast enough and its service business (like farm maintenance) becomes a much bigger profit source than turbine sales.
US Entity List adds Goldwind by name in 2026. Would cut off international upside and confirm geopolitical risk materializing.
Envision Energy posts higher full-year installation volume than Goldwind in 2026. Would show Goldwind losing its #1 global rank to a domestic peer.
- #1 globally with 29.7 GW installed in 2025
- Turbine gross margin just 8.9% on 78.6% of revenue
- China domestic tender market shrank 26% to 121.2 GW
- Core turbine manufacturing margin at just 8.9% under active domestic price war.
- China domestic tender market contracted 26% YoY in 2025, shrinking home base.
- US Entity List additions (143 in 2025) create ongoing export-control exposure risk.
- Active Helms-Burton lawsuit at 11th Circuit alleging trafficking in Cuban property.
- Global offshore wind build contracted 33% in 2025, threatening new offshore lead.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Envision Energy | contesting | 20.9 GW installed in 2025 vs Goldwind's 29.3 to 29.7 GW, closing the gap |
| Vestas | gaining on | Vestas fell to 7th in 2025 annual installs for first time since 2013 tracking began |
| Mingyang Smart Energy | contesting | Top-3 global rival, strong in offshore/floating wind as of 2025 |
| Sany Heavy Energy | contesting | Top-5 global by 2025 volume amid domestic RMB 1,622/kW price war |
| Windey Energy Technology | contesting | Top-5 global by 2025 volume, part of 26% YoY domestic tender contraction |
| Siemens Gamesa | losing to | Led global offshore wind market for two consecutive years through 2025, ahead of Goldwind |
- Is Goldwind profitable in 2025?
- Goldwind's core turbine manufacturing business, 78.6% of revenue, ran at only an 8.9% gross margin in FY2025 even as total revenue rose 28.7% YoY to about RMB 73 billion, per company results reported 2026-03-31.
- Is Goldwind the world's largest wind turbine maker?
- Yes, Goldwind ranked #1 globally by 2025 new installations at 29.3 to 29.7 GW depending on source (BNEF vs GWEC), ahead of Envision Energy's 20.9 GW, though it remains #2 in cumulative installs behind Vestas's 201+ GW as of June 2026.
- Who is Goldwind's biggest competitor?
- Domestically, Envision Energy (20.9 GW installed in 2025, closing the gap fast) and price-cutting rivals Mingyang, Sany, and Windey; globally, Vestas, which fell to 7th place in 2025 annual rankings for the first time since BNEF tracking began in 2013.
- Could AI replace Goldwind's business?
- No. Goldwind is a hardware manufacturer whose moat is proprietary PMDD turbine IP, 163 GW of cumulative installed base data, and state-linked demand access; AI (its own Smart O&M and POWERNEST tools) is used internally to optimize output, not as an external replacement threat.
- Is Goldwind a safe company to join right now?
- Headcount grew about 6 to 13% in 2025 to roughly 11,500 to 11,900 employees and job postings rose 70.7% per Revelio Labs, but the same data shows employee sentiment described as negative and declining as of June 2026.
- Who owns Goldwind?
- Goldwind is publicly traded on Shenzhen (002202) and Hong Kong (2208) exchanges, with state-controlled entities Hexie Health Insurance, China Three Gorges Renewables Group, and the National Social Security Fund collectively holding almost 40% of shares as of 2026-07-24.
