The call

Goodreads holds a scale nobody in book social apps can match, but Amazon runs it as an ad surface, not a product to rebuild for the AI era.

Goodreads lets 150 million people review books, see what friends read, and discover new titles. It is hard to replace because it has two decades of reviews, a massive community of readers, and tight ties to Amazon's store, but the app rarely gets new features while smaller rivals like StoryGraph and Apple Books add AI tools to help readers find books faster. The one thing that could change everything is whether Amazon actually pours money into rebuilding Goodreads with modern AI features in the next year or so; if it does not, the site will slowly lose ground to competitors even though it stays profitable.

Why
01
AI pressure: StoryGraph's AI mood/pace summaries and Apple Books' AI reading coach (iOS 27). Rivals ship AI recommendation and coaching features while Goodreads' core engine has barely changed in two decades. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Apple Books (iOS 27 AI reading coach). Apple bundles AI reading tools straight into iOS, giving readers a reason to track books without ever opening Goodreads. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A 150M-member review graph and Amazon checkout integration make switching costs high, even as StoryGraph stays 30x smaller.
What would change this call
StoryGraph's active user count crosses roughly 20 million. Would show a real migration away from Goodreads, not just niche defection.
Amazon ships an AI-rebuilt recommendation or discovery feature on Goodreads by end of 2027. Would show Amazon still treats Goodreads as a product to grow, not just an ad surface.
Apple Books' AI reading coach (iOS 27) gains visible adoption or press coverage after launch. Would show Apple's AI features are pulling readers' attention and habits away from Goodreads.
Key numbers
  • 150M+ registered members (2023-09-01)
  • 85.2M monthly visits, up 3.8% QoQ (2026-06-19)

Named risks
  • No shipped AI feature as of 2026 while rivals like StoryGraph and Apple Books advance. Severity: high
  • Lean team (~200-450) maintaining a 150M+ user platform, signaling low investment priority within Amazon. Severity: medium
  • User migration to 'Amazon-free' alternatives amid political backlash against Amazon/Bezos. Severity: medium
  • Recurring review-bombing and AI-generated fake review scams eroding trust (2023, May 2026). Severity: medium
  • Conflicting, unverifiable revenue estimates suggest no transparent standalone financial health signal. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Goodreads profitable under Amazon?
Amazon does not disclose Goodreads revenue separately, so no official profit figure exists. Third-party estimates conflict wildly (from ~$5M to ~$78M annually), and Goodreads has operated as an Amazon subsidiary since its 2013 acquisition without independent financial reporting.
Who owns Goodreads?
Amazon.com, Inc. has owned Goodreads since announcing its acquisition in March 2013, which closed in Q2 2013 for a reported $150-200 million when Goodreads had 16 million members, per Amazon's own press release dated 2013-03-28.
Could AI replace Goodreads?
Unlikely to replace it outright: Goodreads' 150M+ member social graph and two-decade review dataset are hard to replicate. But its recommendation engine is called 'primitive' by independent critics (Wikipedia, 2026-07-13), and no generative AI feature has shipped on Goodreads as of July 2026.
Is StoryGraph beating Goodreads?
Not yet at scale. The StoryGraph passed 5 million user signups in January 2026, positioning itself as 'Amazon-free,' but that remains roughly 30 times smaller than Goodreads' 150M+ members cited since September 2023.
What is Goodreads' biggest competitor?
The StoryGraph is the most cited independent rival, with 5 million signups as of January 2026 and an 'Amazon-free' pitch; Apple Books is also a threat after shipping AI reading-coaching features in iOS 27 in March 2026, an area Goodreads has not yet entered.
Has Goodreads shipped any AI features?
As of July 2026, no confirmed generative AI feature has launched on Goodreads. Its most recent product updates, the March 2026 'Did Not Finish' shelf and a July 2025 logo refresh, were non-AI, contrasting with rivals like StoryGraph and Apple Books.
