The call

MasOrange keeps growing revenue and owns Spain's biggest network, but Digi is pulling broadband customers away and Orange now owns the whole thing outright with no layoff promise left.

MasOrange runs Spain's biggest phone and internet network, serving 26 million mobile customers and 7.1 million home internet users. It is hard to replace because it owns the physical cables and wireless towers, plus Spanish rules limit who can compete, but Digi (a scrappy low-cost rival) is steadily stealing fixed broadband customers by undercutting prices. The company lost money during the acquisition and integration by Orange, and now that the guarantee protecting jobs from layoffs expired in late June 2026, the real test is whether Orange will announce deeper cost-cutting, which would signal whether the worst of the merger pain is over or just beginning.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up as a cost-cutting and customer service tool inside MasOrange, not as an outside force taking its customers. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Digi Communications. Digi added about 305,000 fixed broadband lines in H1 2025 while MasOrange lost about 299,000, a direct swap of customers. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owns the fibre and mobile network across Spain, so switching still means using its pipes even when customers pick another brand.
What would change this call
Orange announces a new ERE or mass restructuring at MasOrange in H2 2026. Would show post-acquisition cost cutting is intensifying now the layoff guarantee expired.
Digi's H1 2026 portability and fixed broadband share figures versus H1 2025. Would show whether Digi's customer gains are continuing or plateauing.
A formal Vodafone-MasOrange merger announcement. Would show a new integration and uncertainty cycle starting for MasOrange.
