The call

Illumina still owns the clinical sequencing workflow, but slow growth, China friction, and rising long-read rivals mean it is defending share more than expanding it.

Illumina makes machines that read DNA quickly and cheaply. They sell both the machines and the chemicals (consumables) that run inside them, which keeps customers coming back. The company is very profitable right now, but competitors like PacBio, Chinese companies making cheaper versions, and startup Ultima Genomics are eating into their sales, especially at the edges of the market. The real test is whether these rivals can convince hospitals and labs that their machines work just as well, and whether independent tests in early 2026 prove Ultima's new machine is truly competitive. If customers start switching away or China gains permanent access to the market again, Illumina's comfortable position could shift faster than expected.

Why
01
AI pressure: Oxford Nanopore and PacBio AI-based basecalling software. AI basecalling keeps closing the accuracy gap for long-read rivals, chipping at Illumina's short-read consumables lock-in over time. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: BGI/MGI (China). Cheaper Chinese short-read machines are winning price-sensitive labs while Illumina stays on the US Unreliable Entity List. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Clinical labs are validated on NovaSeq X workflows and consumables, so switching platforms means redoing regulatory approvals and retraining staff.
What would change this call
Independent Ultima UG100 vs NovaSeq X benchmark results published on bioRxiv, March 2026. Would show whether a rival platform matches Illumina at lower cost.
A major clinical lab publicly switches its primary sequencing platform away from Illumina. Would show clinical/regulatory moat is being breached, not just eroded.
Illumina's consumables revenue per installed NovaSeq X instrument in Q2 to Q3 2026 earnings. A decline would show the annuity lock-in is weakening.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $4.10B, up only ~2% (2025-12-28)
  • Stock down from $540 high to $88-$197 range (2026-07-22)
  • Headcount cut 14% since 2023, to 9,467 (2025-12-31)
Named risks
  • China remains on Unreliable Entity List despite Nov 2025 export ban lift, no permanent resolution. Severity: high
  • Independent benchmarks (Ultima, MGI) could show cost/accuracy parity, eroding consumables pricing power. Severity: medium
  • SomaLogic proteomics unit not profitable until 2027, integration delays possible. Severity: medium
  • Ongoing headcount reductions (~14% since 2023) signal defensive posture, execution risk. Severity: medium
  • Leadership turnover with new CCO, CLO, and board changes mid-2026. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Illumina profitable in 2026?
Yes. Q1 2026 (ended March 29, 2026) revenue was $1.09 billion, up 4.8% YoY, with GAAP operating margin of 19.2% and non-GAAP operating margin of 21.9%, and the board raised FY2026 guidance.
Could AI replace Illumina?
No. AI augments Illumina's analytics but can't replace its physical sequencing hardware or consumables ecosystem. In January 2025 Illumina partnered with NVIDIA to run DRAGEN on GPUs and build genomic foundation models, extending rather than threatening its core.
Who is Illumina's biggest competitor?
Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) ranked #2 in global NGS market share behind Illumina in 2024 per GlobalData, while MGI/BGI undercuts on price and Ultima Genomics faced an independent bioRxiv benchmark against NovaSeq in March 2026.
Who owns Illumina?
Illumina is independently publicly traded on Nasdaq as ILMN, with no parent company. Market capitalization was approximately $29.1 billion as of July 22, 2026, down from an all-time high stock price of $540.22.
How exposed is Illumina to China?
China was about 7% of 2024 revenue (~$300 million) and had already declined in prior years. China lifted its sequencer export ban in November 2025, but Illumina remains on China's Unreliable Entity List with no permanent resolution.
What happened between Illumina and GRAIL?
Illumina completed the divestiture of cancer-screening unit GRAIL on June 24, 2024, distributing shares to shareholders and retaining a 14.5% minority stake, following EU antitrust pressure over the original acquisition.
