The call

Kakehashi holds a wide lead in Japan's pharmacy software market, with Fujifilm's Solamichi partnership as the only shipped rival and no confirmed share loss yet.

Kakehashi makes a medication-tracking system used in Japanese pharmacies that keeps patient drug history and handles insurance paperwork. It is hard to replace because Japanese law requires specific record-keeping, pharmacists use it every day, and it is already installed in thousands of locations with real patient data locked inside. The main rival is Fujifilm's CARADA system (partnered with Solamichi since 2021), which is the only other modern cloud-based option backed by a big company with distribution reach. The biggest risk is not technology but business structure: as small mom-and-pop pharmacies merge into large chains, those chains might demand their own systems or use their buying power to demand lower prices, which could squeeze Kakehashi's growth even if its product stays superior.

Why
01
AI pressure: General AI scribe tools from cloud health platforms (e.g. Microsoft, Google). Kakehashi already ships its own generative record-drafting inside Musubi, so outside AI tools face regulatory and workflow barriers to entry. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Fujifilm Healthcare Systems (Pharma-SEED EX) via Solamichi CARADA partnership. Fujifilm's cloud-native CARADA Solamichi system has been live since 2021, the only shipped rival with real distribution behind it. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep daily use by pharmacists, JAHIS-compliant insurance and record-keeping integration, and over a million patient-app users tied to the platform.
What would change this call
Pharmacy-industry reports show CARADA Solamichi installed-base gains at Kakehashi's expense. Would show Fujifilm/Solamichi actually taking share, not just competing on paper.
Kakehashi files for or withdraws an IPO within the next year. Tests whether the CEO's 'large-cap IPO' plan is on track or stalling.
Kakehashi discloses gross margin or net revenue retention figures in future funding/M&A filings. Would confirm or contradict the currently undisclosed financial health of the business.

  • Series D raised about ¥14B ($97M), valuation ~$451M (2025-06-09)
  • Musubi passed 6,000 installed pharmacy locations (2022-08)
Named risks
  • No audited revenue or profitability disclosed as of December 2025, limiting external verification of financial health. Severity: high
  • Solamichi and Fujifilm Healthcare Systems run a shipped, distribution-backed cloud rival since 2021. Severity: medium
  • Japan's pharmacy sector consolidation could raise buyer power among large chains, pressuring pricing. Severity: medium
  • IPO timing is market-dependent given Japan's tightened ~20-30 billion yen listing market-cap bar. Severity: medium
  • 20%+ market share figure is company-stated (vendor-claimed) with no independent verification found. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Kakehashi profitable in 2026?
Kakehashi has not disclosed audited revenue or profit figures as of December 2025; CB Insights lists its revenue field as blank, and the only third-party ARR estimate (Getlatka, ~$222.9K) is considered unreliable given the company's scale and $97M Series D raise.
Who owns Kakehashi?
Kakehashi is privately held and venture-backed, led by CEO Takashi Nakagawa and President Yutaka Nakao. Its largest round, a ~14 billion yen (~$97M) Series D closed in June 2025, was led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives, with prior backers including Dai-ichi Life and JIC Venture Growth.
Could AI replace Kakehashi's Musubi platform?
Kakehashi has already absorbed generative AI into Musubi itself, using it for automated medication-record drafting since September 2024. Its moat rests on Japan-specific regulatory integration (JAHIS v1.1) and legally mandated pharmacist record-keeping, which a generic AI tool cannot easily replicate without similar compliance work.
Who is Kakehashi's biggest competitor?
The most direct cloud rival is the Solamichi System and Fujifilm Healthcare Systems distribution partnership (CARADA Solamichi plus Pharma-SEED EX), live since August 2021. Legacy receipt-computer vendors like Chuo Bijicom's PharnesX-EX also serve Japan's pharmacy back-office market.
Will Kakehashi go public?
CEO Takashi Nakagawa said in June 2025 the company is targeting a 'large-cap IPO' while continuing M&A. As of July 2026 no IPO filing has occurred; the June 2025 Series D was structured partly for acquisitions rather than a rushed listing, given Japan's tightened ~20-30 billion yen market-cap listing bar.
How big is Kakehashi's pharmacy footprint in Japan?
Kakehashi says its Musubi platform serves over 20% of Japan's roughly 60,000 pharmacies as of July 2025 (company claim, unverified by independent study). Independent tracking shows Musubi passed 6,000 installed locations by August 2022 and its Pocket Musubi patient app topped 1 million users by April 2024.
