The call

Millicom's networks and licenses keep it safe from AI and from Claro; the open question is who owns it once Xavier Niel's stake settles.

Millicom runs phone networks, internet service, and mobile money across 11 to 12 countries in Latin America. It is hard to copy because governments issue spectrum licenses that competitors cannot easily obtain, and the company has already built physical networks (fiber cables and wireless towers) across its territory. The main rival, America Movil, is stable and not pushing Millicom out. The one thing that could change everything is whether Xavier Niel, a French investor, succeeds in taking the company private. He has tried twice before and now owns roughly half the shares, which means the stock price for new investors depends almost entirely on whether his next move happens and at what price, even though the business itself is unlikely to fail.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI chatbots and apps ride on Tigo's pipes and towers; they don't replace spectrum, fiber or mobile-money licenses. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: America Movil (Claro). Claro leads Colombia and pre-deal Ecuador, but Millicom is currently buying Telefonica assets to gain share, not losing it. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Regulated spectrum, built fiber and HFC networks, and licensed mobile-money operations across a dozen countries.

Questions people ask
Is Millicom (Tigo) profitable in 2025?
Yes. Millicom reported FY2025 net profit of $1.3 billion, including $727 million from infrastructure transactions, on revenue of $5.8 billion and Adjusted EBITDA of $2,749 million (47.2% margin), per its 2025 Annual Report published 2026-03-24.
Who owns Millicom and is Xavier Niel taking it private?
French billionaire Xavier Niel controls Millicom through Atlas Investissement, absorbed into his iliad Holding in October 2024. Atlas's stake had grown to roughly 46-50% of shares by May 2026 SEC filings, after two hostile buyout bids ($24 and $25.75/share) were rejected in 2024.
Is Millicom a safe company to join right now?
Its telecom infrastructure, spectrum licenses and $916 million 2025 free cash flow suggest low survival risk, but it is simultaneously integrating four acquisitions (Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Chile) closed 2025-2026 and faces an ownership overhang from Xavier Niel's rising Atlas stake, which is the main equity risk, not company failure.
Who is Millicom's biggest competitor?
América Móvil (Claro) is Millicom's dominant regional rival, holding about 45% of Colombia's mobile market and roughly 52% of Ecuador's pre-deal mobile market as of 2025-2026, per regulatory-adjacent sourcing, even as Millicom consolidates market share from a retreating Telefónica.
Could AI replace Millicom's business?
No. Millicom's core moat is regulated spectrum licenses and physical fiber, HFC and mobile networks serving 46-52 million customers across 11-12 Latin American countries as of end-2025; AI can touch customer service or fraud detection but cannot replicate licensed spectrum or built infrastructure.
Is Millicom cutting jobs or growing headcount?
Headcount is rising, not falling. Millicom employed roughly 15,000 people (including its Honduras joint venture) at end-2025, up from about 14,000 at end-2024, driven by newly acquired operations in Ecuador, Uruguay, Chile and Colombia's Coltel.
