The call

Network18 survives on Reliance's backing while its ad-funded news core loses money and its Moneycontrol fintech bet races against AI search erosion and richer lending rivals.

Network18 owns TV news channels, websites, and a financial news subscription service called Moneycontrol across India. Its old business of selling ads on linear TV is protected by government broadcast licenses and viewer loyalty built over 20 years, but that business is shrinking and losing money every quarter. At the same time, AI tools like ChatGPT and Google are doing the routine work of writing headlines and summarizing market news for free, which cuts into the profit margins of its digital news operation. The company's one growth bet is Moneycontrol, which is trying to make money from paid subscriptions and lending products instead of just ads, but it is too new and faces well-funded competitors like CRED and PhonePe. The parent company Reliance owns 57 percent of Network18 and will keep it alive, but whether the subscription pivot can grow fast enough to replace the advertising revenue that is disappearing remains the open question.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT-style answer engines. AI answer engines increasingly summarize news and market data directly, cutting the search clicks that feed Moneycontrol and News18 digital ad revenue. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: CRED, PhonePe, and MyFi in loan-against-mutual-fund lending. These better-funded fintech apps already offer loan-against-mutual-fund products, competing head-on with Moneycontrol's new lending push. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Reliance's 56.89% ownership and stake in Independent Media Trust keep the group funded and give it unmatched TV and digital reach across India.

Any NCLT filing or Reliance announcement carving Moneycontrol/fintech into a separate entity. Would signal governance restructuring risk similar to the Viacom18 carve-out.

Questions people ask
Is Network18 Media profitable in 2026?
Network18's consolidated FY26 (year ended March 31, 2026) showed a full-year profit of Rs 155.20 crore, but this was aided by exceptional items. Standalone Q4 FY26 loss widened to Rs 72.51 crore from Rs 69.48 crore a year earlier, per company filings dated April 18, 2026.
Who owns Network18 Media?
Network18 is majority controlled by Reliance Industries, which holds 56.89% via the Independent Media Trust as of July 13, 2026. Reliance took control through a 2012 debt for equity arrangement completed in 2014. Chairman is Adil Zainulbhai, with Rahul Joshi as MD and CEO.
Could AI replace Network18's news operations?
AI threatens the commodity layer, headline writing, wire rewriting, and market data commentary across Moneycontrol and CNBC-TV18's digital output. But broadcast licenses, BARC-rated distribution, decades of brand trust, and 1 million-plus paying Moneycontrol subscribers as of October 29, 2025 remain harder for AI tools to replicate.
Who is Network18's biggest competitor?
In TV news, rivals include TV Today Network, Zee Media, NDTV, ABP, and Republic. Zee Entertainment hit an 18.6-20% urban TV share high in June 2026. In fintech, Moneycontrol's new Loans Against Mutual Funds product competes against better funded CRED, PhonePe, and MyFi, all of which launched LAMF products in 2025.
How many people does Network18 employ?
Network18's FY25 annual report lists 4,886 employees as of March 31, 2025. Third-party estimator Revelio Labs put global headcount at roughly 6,865 as of December 2025, up from 6,625 in 2024, describing the company as actively hiring, though this figure uses a different methodology than the company's own statutory count.
Is Moneycontrol's subscription and fintech pivot working for Network18?
Moneycontrol surpassed 1 million paid subscribers as of October 29, 2025, and MD Rahul Joshi said non-advertising revenue (subscription plus lending) grew from near zero four years ago to about 30% of Moneycontrol's mix by October 16, 2025. It remains an early-stage bet against larger fintech rivals.
