The call

NOS still owns Portugal's networks and posts growing profit, but a discount rival and a frozen 26% shareholder stake are the two things worth watching.

NOS is a telephone and internet company in Portugal that owns fiber cables running to 5.8 million homes and operates 5G cell towers across the country. These physical networks take years and billions of dollars to build, so new competitors cannot easily copy them, and software or AI cannot replace physical cables and towers. The real problem is that a cheaper rival called Digi, which bought another company called Nowo, is pushing prices down in Portugal, and NOS's own budget brand WOO is also cutting into profits, leaving the company with flat sales and shrinking margins that could get worse if price wars continue. What matters most now is whether Digi keeps gaining customers and whether NOS can fix costs faster than it loses revenue.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. NOS runs its own SCAILE AI program internally to cut call-handling time and support costs, not fend off an AI rival. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Digi Communications (post-Nowo Portugal entry). Digi's cut-price mobile and broadband plans are live in Portugal and coincide with NOS B2C revenue slipping 0.3% in Q2 2026. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owning the fiber and spectrum: 5.8M homes passed and near-total 5G coverage that no software rival can copy.
What would change this call
Digi Portugal's mobile market share reported at or above 8-10% sustained. Would show low-cost entrant meaningfully eroding NOS's customer base.
NOS Q3 2026 earnings (October 2026) B2C revenue trend. Would show whether the -0.3% B2C decline is accelerating or stabilizing.
Court ruling on the frozen ZOPT/dos Santos ~26% NOS stake. Would show whether a governance/ownership shakeup disrupts NOS control.

Questions people ask
Is NOS SGPS profitable in 2026?
Yes. In Q2 2026 (reported July 24, 2026) NOS posted consolidated revenue of €458M, EBITDA of €206M (+1.5% YoY, 44.9% margin), and free cash flow of €63M, up about 9% excluding non-recurring items.
Who owns NOS SGPS?
As of March 2024, Sonaecom held 37.37%, the frozen ZOPT stake linked to Isabel dos Santos held 26.07% (seized by a Lisbon court in 2020 amid the Luanda Leaks probe), and Mubadala Investment Company held 5.00%.
Is NOS losing customers to low-cost rival Digi?
Digi bought Portuguese operator Nowo for €150M in August 2024 and undercuts on price, but held under 3% mobile share as of January 2026. Still, NOS's B2C revenue slipped 0.3% YoY in Q2 2026 partly due to this pressure.
Could AI replace NOS SGPS or its telecom business?
No. NOS's moat is physical: 5.8 million fiber homes passed and 97-99% 5G coverage as of Q1 2025, plus licensed spectrum, none of which AI can replicate. NOS instead uses its internal 'SCAILE' AI program to cut costs, per its July 2026 earnings call.
Who is NOS SGPS's biggest competitor?
MEO, owned by Altice, is the market leader with 36.9% Portuguese mobile share versus NOS's 30.6% and Vodafone Portugal's 28.0%, per a January 21, 2026 Mordor Intelligence report; together the three control 95.5% of the market.
What is the ZOPT stake dispute affecting NOS SGPS?
In 2020, amid the Luanda Leaks scandal, a Lisbon criminal court ordered preventive seizure of roughly half of the ZOPT joint venture's NOS stake linked to Isabel dos Santos. That frozen 26.07% remnant remained unresolved as of the March 2024 ownership snapshot.
