ONLYOFFICE
Latvian-made, AGPL open-source office suite competing with Microsoft and Google as a self-hosted alternative.
ONLYOFFICE built the code and the sovereignty pitch that a better-funded EU coalition just forked and is now selling back to the same government buyers.
ONLYOFFICE builds document software that companies and governments can run on their own servers instead of using Microsoft Office or Google Docs. It was hard to replace because it reads Microsoft files perfectly, works in Europe where privacy matters, and had 15 years of customers. The problem is that its own software code was free to copy under open-source rules, so a group backed by Nextcloud, IONOS, and Proton made Euro-Office, a cleaner version using ONLYOFFICE's same code but with better European support. ONLYOFFICE only survives if it can find new customers without Nextcloud's help and keep the ones it already has from switching to Euro-Office.
Nextcloud or Proton bundles Euro-Office instead of ONLYOFFICE for existing joint customers. would show active displacement at accounts ONLYOFFICE previously held via that channel.
ONLYOFFICE announces hosted DocSpace growth or a marquee EU contract win against Euro-Office. would show ONLYOFFICE rebuilding independent distribution and defending its market.

- Is ONLYOFFICE profitable?
- ONLYOFFICE discloses no audited financials. It is privately held and bootstrapped with no reported venture funding as of September 2025, and the company describes itself as cash generating, but no independent profit figures exist to confirm profitability.
- Could AI replace ONLYOFFICE?
- Unlikely to fully replace it. ONLYOFFICE's self-hosted, AGPL licensed, OOXML compatible editor serves sovereignty focused institutional buyers like the City of Lyon, a niche AI copilots inside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace cannot serve due to cloud jurisdiction constraints, per French Senate testimony from June 10, 2025.
- Who owns ONLYOFFICE?
- ONLYOFFICE is developed by Ascensio System SIA in Riga, Latvia, owned via Ascensio System Ltd (UK) by ONLYOFFICE Capital Group Pte Ltd, a Singapore holding company incorporated May 24, 2023, which the company says completed its separation from prior Russian ownership.
- Who is ONLYOFFICE's biggest competitor?
- Euro-Office, an EU native fork of ONLYOFFICE's own AGPL codebase backed by Nextcloud, IONOS, Proton, XWiki, OpenProject and Eurostack, shipped its first stable release on June 9, 2026, directly targeting the same EU sovereignty procurement market ONLYOFFICE built its business on.
- Is ONLYOFFICE a Russian company?
- Ascensio System SIA, ONLYOFFICE's operating entity, was historically a subsidiary of Russia based New Communication Technologies, which triggered EU sanctions exposure. The company restructured under a Singapore holding company in May 2023, which it says separated it from Russian ownership.
- Did ONLYOFFICE lose its Nextcloud partnership?
- Yes. ONLYOFFICE suspended its 8 year Nextcloud integration partnership in early April 2026 amid a licensing dispute over the Euro-Office fork, though the underlying software connector reportedly continues to function, per Computerworld reporting dated April 2, 2026.
