The call

Philips keeps its imaging business intact and growing, but an open DOJ probe into Respironics and a margin gap versus GE HealthCare are still working through the system.

Philips Healthcare sells machines that take pictures inside the body (like MRI and CT scanners) and manages hospitals' medical equipment. It is hard to replace because hospitals spend years learning how to use Philips machines, doctors trust them, and the company has government approval that takes years to get. GE HealthCare is its main rival and is ahead on artificial intelligence features. The biggest wildcard is whether the U.S. Department of Justice investigation into Philips' breathing machines (a different business unit) will hurt the company's reputation or finances over the next year or two.

Why
01
AI pressure: GE HealthCare CleaRecon-DL and other imaging-AI tools. AI mostly upgrades Philips scanners rather than replacing them, but rivals could pull ahead if their AI reads images better. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: GE HealthCare. GE HealthCare holds about 32% of imaging share with stronger margins and is pushing its own imaging AI faster than Philips. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. FDA-cleared device installs, decade-long hospital service contracts, and patient data locked inside Philips workflow software.
What would change this call
DOJ investigation into Respironics resolves or expands within 12-18 months. Would show whether Connected Care liability is contained or materially larger than settled amounts.
Philips reports order intake and margin trend in Diagnosis & Treatment through FY2026. Would show if GE and Siemens are structurally taking imaging share or Philips core is holding steady.
GE HealthCare ships or expands CleaRecon-DL adoption versus Philips SmartHeart/DeviceGuide uptake. Would show whether GE's imaging AI is pulling customers away from Philips platforms.

Questions people ask
Is Philips Healthcare profitable in 2026?
Yes. Philips reported Q1 2026 sales of 3.9 billion euros with 4% comparable growth and a 9.0% adjusted EBITA margin, up 40 basis points. FY2026 guidance reiterated May 6, 2026 targets 12.5 to 13.0% adjusted EBITA margin and 1.3 to 1.5 billion euros free cash flow, excluding DOJ liability.
Who is Philips Healthcare's biggest competitor?
GE HealthCare, which holds roughly 32% of global medical imaging share as of 2025 per third party market data. Together GE, Siemens Healthineers, and Philips hold an estimated 50 to 55% of global imaging revenue, with GE cited as the margin leader among the three.
Could AI replace Philips Healthcare's imaging business?
Unlikely soon. Philips embeds AI like SmartHeart and DeviceGuide, FDA cleared March 2026, directly into its own Azurion and EPIQ CVxi hardware as copilot tools, not standalone software substitutes. No frontier AI lab partnership was identified as of July 2026, and FDA clearance plus installed hospital equipment remain the moat.
Is Philips Healthcare facing layoffs in 2026?
Headcount is roughly stable. Philips reported about 64,317 FTE employees at end of Q1 2026, while Revelio Labs estimated global headcount at 69,573 in December 2025, down 5.1% from 73,338 in 2023, alongside active hiring of 3,341 job postings in 2025, up 12.2% year over year.
Who owns Philips Healthcare?
Philips Healthcare is not separately listed; it is the health technology division of Royal Philips (Koninklijke Philips N.V.), a publicly traded Dutch company on NYSE as PHG and Euronext Amsterdam as PHIA, with market capitalization near 22.7 billion euros as of July 22, 2026.
What is the DOJ investigation into Philips about?
The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating Philips Respironics, tied to the CPAP device recall; this investigation is explicitly excluded from Philips' FY2026 financial guidance, and a related False Claims Act appeal, case 26-1653, was active in the Third Circuit as of May 28, 2026.
