The call

RCN keeps its license and its telenovelas while the ad money and the audience drift toward streaming and toward Caracol.

RCN Televisión is a Colombian television broadcaster that makes money by selling ads during its programs and producing telenovelas (soap operas) that it owns. The company is hard to replace because the government limits who can broadcast TV, and RCN owns its own shows, but that protection does not stop people from watching Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ instead, those streaming services are now selling the same ads that TV used to sell, which means less money for RCN. The company has lost money most years, carries debt, and ranks second to its rival Caracol on almost every measure of popularity. The one thing that could save RCN is if its new streaming service called RCN Total, which it started rolling out in October 2025, actually gets paying customers and earns real money; if it stays just a way to show old content without making revenue, then RCN's decline will likely keep going.

Why
01
AI pressure: Amazon DSP programmatic ad buying paired with Netflix connected-TV inventory. AI-driven ad targeting now routes global ad dollars straight into Netflix's CTV slots, skipping RCN's ad sales desk. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Caracol Televisión. Caracol tops RCN on every ratings measure, including a 63.84% to 28.18% national share gap in November 2024. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A regulated free-to-air license and owned telenovela IP like Betty la Fea keep RCN alive, not growing.

Questions people ask
Is RCN Televisión profitable in 2026?
RCN Televisión has a history of chronic net losses, including COP 233.8bn (about US$68mn) in 2018. Mid-2024 ad revenue grew 6.8% against a shrinking market, but full-year 2025 results due around March 31, 2026 will show whether that recovery held or losses returned.
Who owns RCN Televisión?
RCN Televisión is privately controlled by Colombia's Ardila Lülle family through Organización Ardila Lülle, which held 82.43% of shares as of a March 2026 shareholder snapshot, with Radio Cadena Nacional SAS holding 10.62%. The company lists shares as RCNTELEVI but trades thinly.
Is RCN Televisión losing to Caracol?
Yes. Colombia's Centro Nacional de Consultoría reported Caracol holding 63.84% of national-channel open TV share versus RCN's 28.18% in November 2024, a lead RCN has not closed as of the network's early 2026 reality-show ratings battles.
Could AI replace RCN Televisión?
AI mainly touches RCN's back-office, subtitling, and ad-targeting workflows, not its core moat. The network's regulated broadcast license, owned telenovela catalog like 'Yo soy Betty, la fea', and live rights such as the 2026 World Cup final are not AI-replicable assets.
Is RCN Televisión a safe place to work in 2026?
Headcount has been roughly flat, at about 2,707 employees in December 2025 versus 2,731 in 2023, a 0.9% decline, per Revelio Labs data from June 2026. Active job postings rose from 2 to 5 in 2025, a small absolute base.
What is RCN Total and is it succeeding?
RCN Total is RCN's OTT streaming app, expanded globally to Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Samsung and LG TV on October 21, 2025 by vendor ICARO Media Group. No independently verified subscriber or ad revenue figures have been reported as of mid-2026.
