The call

Rocket.Chat holds a real position in sovereign and classified team chat, but is racing Mattermost for that same room on thin, unrepeated funding.

Rocket.Chat makes messaging software that runs on computers completely cut off from the internet, which makes it legal and safe for government and military work where Slack and Microsoft Teams cannot operate. The hard part is that Mattermost does almost the same thing and may have stronger relationships with the US military, and Rocket.Chat is running out of money (last funding was a small bridge loan in early 2025 with no big new round yet). The one thing that could turn this around is if Rocket.Chat wins a bunch of major US government contracts before it either needs to take a painful down-round, merge with another company, or runs dry.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Frontier models like GPT-5 or Claude can't get IL6 authorization; AI summarization features get bolted onto Rocket.Chat's air-gapped niche, not around it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Teams and Slack. Cloud giants are barred from classified, air-gapped deployments by compliance architecture, not competitive weakness. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. DoD Impact Level 6 authorization and self-hosted architecture that cloud-only rivals structurally cannot offer.
What would change this call
Rocket.Chat closes a priced Series B within 12 months. Would show capital markets still back the company over Mattermost.
Another bridge round, down-round, or acquisition talk surfaces within 12 months. Would show cash constraints are worsening and equity value is eroding.
Mattermost publicly wins a marquee US DoD or IL6-level program instead of Rocket.Chat. Would show the sovereign-comms niche has room for only one leader, and it isn't Rocket.Chat.
Key numbers
  • $10M Series A bridge round (Jan 2025)
  • Estimated $31.5M ARR (Dec 2024)
  • Headcount fell from 193 to as low as 118 (Dec 2024)
Named risks
  • No Series B since 2023/2025 bridge round; funding gap could force a down-round or acquisition. Severity: high
  • Headcount estimates diverge sharply (118 to 193) suggesting possible contraction from 2024 peak. Severity: medium
  • E2EE vulnerabilities disclosed by academic researchers in 2024 in security-sensitive defense customer base. Severity: medium
  • Mattermost contests the same narrow sovereign/air-gapped niche with comparable community size and DoD ties. Severity: high
  • Generic AI summarization features risk commoditization as Microsoft Copilot and Slack AI ship similar capabilities. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Rocket.Chat profitable in 2026?
No audited profitability figures are public. Third-party vendor Latka estimated 2024 revenue at roughly $31.5M (unaudited), up from $11.7M in Dec 2023, but no profit or margin data has been disclosed by the company as of mid 2026.
Who owns Rocket.Chat?
Rocket.Chat is privately held and venture backed, operated as Rocket.Chat Technologies Corp, incorporated in Delaware with engineering rooted in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Investors include Valor Capital, Greycroft, Monashees, NEA, and Bob Young, per press releases through 2023 and 2025.
Could AI replace Rocket.Chat's product?
Unlikely to fully replace it: frontier LLMs cannot ship IL6-authorized air-gapped software, so Rocket.Chat's sovereign/self-hosted compliance moat holds. But generic AI summarization features, launched in Rocket.Chat AI beta July 2024 and GA in v7.0 2025, are commoditizable and already matched by Microsoft Copilot and Slack AI.
Who is Rocket.Chat's biggest competitor?
Mattermost is the most direct competitor, contesting the same open-source, self-hosted, defense-niche market with comparable GitHub community size (about 38,000 stars vs Rocket.Chat's 45,000+) and arguably stronger US DoD entrenchment as of 2025.
How much funding has Rocket.Chat raised?
Reported totals conflict by source: CB Insights cites $47.96M across 8 rounds (as of Sept 2023), while Latka cites $26.9M (Dec 2024). Confirmed rounds include a $19M Series A in Feb 2021 and a $10M Series A bridge announced around Sept 2023.
Does Rocket.Chat have government or defense customers?
Rocket.Chat claims a DoD Authorization to Operate at Impact Level 6 and listing in the AWS Intelligence Community Marketplace as of June 2026 (vendor-claimed). Named customers include the US Navy, Brazil's Chamber of Deputies, eu-LISA, and the Government of British Columbia, per company press materials.
