Sun TV Network Limited
Tamil-language TV broadcaster with DTH, film library, and Sun NXT streaming arm.
Sun TV still prints cash from Tamil broadcasting and DTH, but its streaming arm lags far behind Netflix and JioHotstar while JioStar keeps pressing its core GEC lead.
Sun TV makes money from TV channels and a streaming app by showing movies and shows popular in South India. It is getting harder to compete because JioStar (which includes Star Vijay and is backed by Reliance, a huge company) is taking away viewers with its own channels, and fewer people are paying for cable TV than before. Sun TV's own streaming app, Sun NXT, is much smaller than Netflix, Prime Video, and JioHotstar, so the real question is whether Sun TV can grow its streaming service fast enough to replace the ad money it is losing from its traditional TV channels.
Sun NXT subscriber or ranking disclosures in South Indian OTT tier reports. Shows whether Sun NXT closes the gap with Netflix, JioHotstar and Prime or stays subscale.

- Is Sun TV Network profitable in 2026?
- Yes. Sun TV Network reported FY26 standalone revenue of ₹4,102.13 crore (up 6% YoY) but PAT fell to ₹1,393.52 crore from ₹1,654.46 crore in FY25, as of 31 March 2026, due to higher costs and cricket-franchise related exceptional items.
- Is Sun TV losing market share to Star Vijay or JioStar?
- Yes, historically. Sun TV's Tamil GEC audience share fell from ~50.6% in Jan 2018 to a low of ~39% in Feb 2019 as Star Vijay and Zee Tamil gained ground, recovering only to ~47% by Q3 FY20 per BARC data.
- Who owns Sun TV Network?
- Sun TV Network is publicly listed (BSE 532733, NSE SUNTV) and promoter-controlled. Chairman Kalanithi Maran and family hold roughly 75% of equity as of 2026, down from ~80% before a 2013 stake sale.
- Could AI replace Sun TV Network's business?
- Not core operations, but AI dubbing tools like Camb.AI and Dubverse can now localize content into 100+ languages in hours instead of weeks (as of June 2026), eroding a key cost advantage for multi-language broadcasters like Sun TV.
- Is Sun NXT competitive in the OTT streaming market?
- No. In South Indian film streaming rights, Netflix holds 36%, JioHotstar 21%, Prime Video 18%, and ZEE5 13% as of June 2026; Sun NXT does not appear among the ranked tiers, making it subscale versus larger rivals.
