The call

Sunrise sits protected inside a licensed, three-player Swiss market while its own revenue and headcount keep shrinking underneath that protection.

Sunrise is the second-largest phone and internet company in Switzerland, with physical assets like cell towers and underground cables that took decades and billions to build and cannot be quickly copied by competitors. The main rival is Swisscom, which is larger and has better brand recognition, but Swiss law limits how many companies can dominate the market, which protects Sunrise's position for now. The problem is that Sunrise is losing money every year, its total sales are barely flat or shrinking, and it keeps laying off workers and restructuring, which suggests the core business is getting tougher, not better; a new artificial intelligence partnership called PHOENIQS might help, but it has not yet proven it can bring in real revenue or change the downward trend.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up inside Sunrise as a cost-cutting and monetization tool (PHOENIQS, support automation), not as an outside force eating its customers. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Swisscom. Swisscom already runs the bigger, higher-rated network and holds over half the mobile and broadband market; nothing structural stops it from pulling more share. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Spectrum licenses, physical fiber/cable plant, and a fixed 3-player Swiss market that a new entrant or software company cannot replicate quickly.

A third restructuring round is announced after the January 2026 cuts. would show cost pressure and revenue stagnation are not yet resolved.
PHOENIQS reports disclosed B2B AI revenue in H2 2026. would show Sunrise can offset core-market pressure with new revenue instead of just cutting costs.
