The call

Swisscom's Swiss position looks safe for years, but Sunrise's pricing war at home and the slow, costly Italy merger are the parts actually in motion.

Swisscom is Switzerland's largest phone and internet provider, majority-owned by the Swiss government. It is hard to replace because it owns the phone network, has government support, and controls more than half the market, but the company is losing customers to a rival called Sunrise through lower prices, its Italian business is struggling, and its total revenue is shrinking. The key question is whether management can stop the customer losses and fix the Italian operations by late summer 2026, or whether the company will continue its downward slide.

Why
01
AI pressure: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud. Cloud giants sell enterprise AI and IT services in Switzerland, squeezing Swisscom's business unit, but core phone and broadband lines aren't AI targets. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Sunrise UPC. Sunrise's aggressive pricing is pulling domestic subscribers from Swisscom since Q2 2024, and management admits it has little left to counter with. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 51% Swiss government ownership plus roughly half the country's mobile and broadband customers, both hard to dislodge in 3 to 5 years.
What would change this call
August 6, 2026 Swisscom earnings show Italy (Fastweb+Vodafone) revenue still falling. Would show integration is not stabilizing as promised, deepening execution risk.
Swiss domestic mobile/broadband subscriber counts in Q2-Q3 2026 filings versus Sunrise. Would confirm whether Sunrise's price-led share gains are continuing unchecked.
Swisscom dividend announcement or guidance change in 2026. A cut would confirm cash generation can no longer support current payout.

Questions people ask
Is Swisscom profitable in 2026?
Yes but under pressure: FY2025 net income was CHF 1,270 million, down 17.6% year on year as of 2025-12-31, largely due to Vodafone Italia acquisition and integration costs, per Swisscom's February 2026 results release.
Who owns Swisscom?
The Swiss Confederation held 51% of Swisscom's shares as of year-end 2025, making it majority state-owned even though it trades publicly on the SIX Swiss Exchange under ticker SCMN, per a Quartr summary published 2026-07-09.
Is Swisscom losing customers to Sunrise?
Yes. Swisscom has bled domestic subscribers across most wireless and wireline segments since Q2 2024 amid aggressive Sunrise promotional pricing, and management told analysts in 2026 there is 'not much more' it can do, per Morgan Stanley research cited 2026-06-11.
Could AI replace Swisscom?
No. AI cannot replicate Swisscom's physical fiber and mobile network, spectrum licenses, or state-backed regulatory position. Instead Swisscom sells AI commercially, launching its Swiss AI Assistant and GenAI Studio in February 2026.
Is Swisscom's Italy expansion working?
Mixed. Q1 2026 Italy revenue fell 4.5% to €1,737 million and management itself called 2026 a 'transition year,' with the targeted ~€600 million in annual synergies from the Vodafone Italia deal not fully realized until 2029.
Is Swisscom stock a buy right now?
Sentiment turned negative in 2026: Morgan Stanley cut Swisscom to underweight with a CHF 600 price target on 2026-06-11, joining downgrades from UBS, New Street Research and BNP Paribas Exane, pushing consensus to 'Reduce' by July 2026.
