The call

TEGNA's stations still run under its own name, but its fate now hinges on a courtroom fight over who gets to own and cut them.

TEGNA owns local TV stations and sells the right to carry cable channels, which used to be hard to compete with because the government gave them licenses and required cable companies to carry them. Now fewer people watch cable or traditional TV, and Nexstar, the company that bought TEGNA in March 2026, is cutting jobs and combining overlapping work instead of growing. An antitrust trial in July 2027 will decide whether Nexstar can keep all of TEGNA's stations or has to sell some, which means the whole deal remains uncertain and could be undone or reshaped by a court.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google/YouTube and AI news aggregators summarizing local weather and news. AI search summaries and YouTube local channels pull eyeballs and ad dollars away from station newscasts and apps. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Nexstar Media Group. Nexstar already closed its $6.2B purchase of TEGNA and plans to cut overlapping local and corporate roles once courts allow it. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A court-ordered hold-separate injunction keeps Nexstar from merging operations or cutting jobs until the antitrust trial concludes.

Questions people ask
Is TEGNA still a publicly traded company?
No. TGNA stock was delisted March 23, 2026 after Nexstar Media Group completed its $6.2 billion, $22.00-per-share acquisition of TEGNA on March 19, 2026. TEGNA is now a wholly owned Nexstar subsidiary, though a federal injunction requires it be run separately pending an antitrust trial.
Is TEGNA profitable?
Yes but declining. TEGNA reported FY2025 net income of $219.9 million, down 63% from $599.8 million in 2024, on revenue of $2.712 billion (down 13% YoY), reflecting the loss of 2024's political ad and Olympics revenue, per its March 2, 2026 earnings release.
Who owns TEGNA now?
Nexstar Media Group closed its $6.2 billion acquisition of TEGNA on March 19, 2026. However, a federal court issued a preliminary injunction on April 17, 2026 forcing Nexstar to keep TEGNA operating separately until an antitrust trial, scheduled for July 6, 2027, resolves the case.
Could AI replace jobs at TEGNA?
AI is automating newsroom triage tasks, journalists reportedly spend up to two hours a day sifting story tips, 90% irrelevant (per a 2024-10-15 TVNewsCheck report), and TEGNA posted for a 'Director, AI & Automation' role in June 2026. But FCC licenses, retransmission fees and network affiliations remain untouched by AI.
Who is TEGNA's biggest competitor?
Nexstar Media Group is now both TEGNA's owner and its former rival, having closed a $6.2 billion acquisition March 19, 2026. Other major local-broadcast peers include Sinclair Broadcast Group, Gray Media, and E.W. Scripps, all actively consolidating stations industry-wide.
Will the Nexstar-TEGNA merger be unwound?
Unclear. As of July 22, 2026, 13 state attorneys general and DirecTV are suing to block the merger, alleging Nexstar violated a hold-separate injunction. A compliance hearing is set for September 3, 2026, with the full antitrust trial scheduled July 6, 2027.
