The call

Tock isn't being eaten by AI or a rival, it's being retired by its own owner and merged into Resy within weeks of this writing.

Tock lets diners book tables at restaurants and helps restaurants manage reservations and payments. American Express, which owns Tock, decided in February 2026 to merge it into Resy, another reservation app it also owns, and shut Tock down by summer 2026. The hard part for any reservation system to keep customers is having restaurants actually use it and having diners want to book through it, which American Express is moving entirely to Resy instead, so Tock's advantages disappear. What could change the picture is if AI tools like Google's search or voice apps start making their own deals directly with restaurants to handle bookings, instead of just sending people to Resy or OpenTable, which would make all these reservation apps less important.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google AI Mode and TableCheck/Aiello voice agents. AI booking agents route through Tock's system today, but if they build direct restaurant ties, reservation platforms get skipped entirely. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: American Express. Amex, Tock's own owner, announced Feb 24, 2026 that Tock is being folded into Resy, with the brand, app, and website shut down by summer 2026. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Amex's card dining credits and payment integration survive, but they move to Resy, not to Tock as a company.
What would change this call
Tock brand, app, and website are fully retired into Resy by summer 2026 as announced. Confirms Amex has completed folding Tock into Resy as a distinct entity.
Google AI Mode or another AI agent starts booking directly with restaurants, bypassing Resy/Tock/OpenTable APIs. Would show reservation platforms losing control of the diner relationship to AI agents.
Post-merger headcount or org charts show Tock-origin roles (sales, marketing, consumer app) eliminated below the 157 count. Would confirm Tock functions, not just the brand, are being absorbed or cut.

Questions people ask
Is Tock shutting down or merging with another company?
Yes. American Express announced on Feb 24, 2026 that Tock will be merged into its Resy platform, with Tock's standalone brand, app, and exploretock.com website scheduled for sunset by summer 2026. Tock's back-end restaurant tooling continues under Resy, but Tock ceases to exist as a distinct consumer brand.
Who owns Tock?
American Express owns Tock, having completed its $400 million cash acquisition from Squarespace on Oct 16, 2024. As of Feb 24, 2026, Amex is merging Tock into its other dining platform, Resy (also Amex-owned), consolidating both into one ~25,000-venue platform.
Is Tock profitable?
No public profitability data exists. Third-party estimates of Tock's revenue vary wildly and are unreliable: Growjo estimated $66.4M (2022), Datanyze $29.2M, and SignalHire $105.7M, none of which are audited or company-disclosed figures.
Could AI replace Tock's reservation system?
Not yet directly. As of August 2025, Google AI Mode can search reservation availability across Tock, Resy, and OpenTable but still requires manual confirmation in the underlying platform. Rivals like TableCheck added a 24/7 AI voice-booking agent with Aiello in July 2026, showing rising but not yet direct-replacement AI exposure.
Who is Tock's biggest competitor?
OpenTable (Booking Holdings, 55,000+ restaurants in 80+ countries) and Toast (24-45% installed-base share by market) both outsize Tock, which held just 6.7% global market share as of April 2026. Tock is now itself being absorbed into sibling brand Resy as of Feb 2026.
How much did American Express pay for Tock?
American Express paid Squarespace $400 million in cash for Tock, with the deal announced June 21, 2024 and completed October 15-16, 2024, per TSG Payments' Oct 16, 2024 report.
