The call

Turo owns the peer to peer car sharing category with no AI or big rental company close to replacing it, but its own growth has slowed to single digits and the IPO is on ice.

Turo is a marketplace where regular people rent out their own cars to travelers, competing against traditional rental companies like Enterprise and Hertz. It is hard to copy because Turo spent 15+ years building trust with 140,000 car owners and 3.5 million renters, plus it has insurance and regulatory approvals that took years to secure; the big rental car companies could theoretically do this but would wreck their own profitable fleet business if they tried, and AI cannot replace the human underwriting and customer service needed to run a safe two-sided marketplace. The one thing that matters: whether the recent pickup in bookings (up 21% in summer 2026) keeps going or fades back to nearly flat growth, because that will determine if the company ever goes public and rewards early investors.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI chat agents could book rentals for users, but no lab has built a car sharing marketplace or the insurance and vetting layer underneath it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Enterprise, Avis, Hertz. Rental giants own fleets and would cannibalize that model by copying Turo's peer to peer approach, so they have not shipped a real rival in 15 plus years. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Turo's 140,000 plus hosts, regulatory approvals built since 2009, and insurance and vetting infrastructure are hard to copy without cannibalizing an existing fleet business.
What would change this call
Turo's Q3/Q4 2026 booking growth stays near summer 2026's +21% YoY versus flattening to single digits. Shows whether demand is genuinely reaccelerating or the summer spike was seasonal noise.
Turo refiles an S-1 or closes a new priced funding round in 2026 or 2027. Would signal investor confidence returning after the Feb 2025 IPO withdrawal.
Turo's adjusted EBITDA margin trend in 2026 annual results compared to the 46% YoY decline in 9M 2024. Indicates whether cost discipline after the April 2025 layoffs is restoring profitability.

Questions people ask
Is Turo profitable in 2024?
Yes, modestly. Turo reported roughly $26M in net profit on $958M revenue in 2024, per Sacra (Feb 2025). Gross margin fell to 46% from 51% in 2023, and adjusted EBITDA dropped 46% YoY in the first nine months of 2024, showing profitability is thinning even as revenue grows.
Did Turo go public?
No. Turo filed an S-1 in January 2022 after a confidential filing in August 2021, but withdrew its IPO on February 13, 2025 citing market conditions, per TechCrunch. No new funding round or valuation has been disclosed since the April 2022 $1.24B mark.
Is Turo laying off employees?
Yes. Turo cut about 15% of its workforce (roughly 150 employees) in April 2025 shortly after scrapping its IPO, per Bloomberg Law. Headcount fell from 1,783 in 2023 to 1,247 in 2025, a 30% decline, per Revelio Labs (June 2026).
Who owns Turo?
Turo is privately held. IAC (InterActiveCorp) became the largest shareholder after leading a $250M Series E in July 2019 at a valuation over $1 billion, and holds roughly a 31% stake, per Wikipedia (2026).
Who is Turo's biggest competitor?
Traditional fleet giants Enterprise, Avis, and Hertz control about 95% of the US rental market with roughly 2 million vehicles combined, but their fleet-ownership economics structurally block them from copying Turo's peer-to-peer model, per Sacra (Feb 2025). Direct P2P rivals Getaround and Kyte both collapsed in 2025.
Could AI replace Turo?
Unlikely. Turo's moat is a regulated two-sided marketplace built since 2009, layered insurance and vetting infrastructure, and 140,000 active hosts, none of which an AI model can replicate without also assembling comparable regulatory approvals and underwriting relationships, per the company's own 2025 data.
