The call

Whimsical built the diagramming layer that ChatGPT just learned to do itself, while Miro and Figma out-muscle it for the enterprise seats that remain.

Whimsical is a tool that helps teams create flowcharts and diagrams by typing descriptions instead of drawing by hand. The problem is that ChatGPT and Claude now do this for free, and much larger companies like Miro (valued at $17.5 billion) and Figma's FigJam are also moving into the same space with their own audiences. Whimsical even put its own product inside ChatGPT as a plugin, which means people can skip visiting Whimsical's website altogether. The one thing that could change the picture is if OpenAI decides to build diagramming directly into ChatGPT itself instead of using Whimsical's plugin, or if Whimsical gets acquired by a larger company before its position weakens further.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT and Claude native text-to-diagram generation. ChatGPT can now draw whiteboards natively, the exact task Whimsical sells, and Whimsical had to plug into ChatGPT to stay visible. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Miro ($17.5B, 99% of Fortune 100) and Figma's FigJam. Miro and FigJam already sit inside the same enterprise seats Whimsical needs to land, with far bigger sales and distribution muscle. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Teams with years of stored diagrams, docs, and flowcharts in Whimsical face real switching friction to move that history elsewhere.
What would change this call
Whimsical announces a Series B or any new funding round. Would show investors still believe the lock-in moat is defensible.
OpenAI builds native diagramming into ChatGPT instead of hosting Whimsical's app. Would show Whimsical's ChatGPT channel getting disintermediated by its own partner.
Headcount keeps shrinking past 37 or acquisition/acquihire chatter appears. Would confirm a decay or soft-landing trajectory rather than stabilization.

Questions people ask
Is Whimsical profitable in 2026?
Whimsical says it was profitable and generated millions in revenue during its first four bootstrapped years before its 2021 raise. No audited or company-disclosed revenue figure has been published since, so current profitability as of 2026 is unverified.
Has Whimsical raised new funding recently?
No. Whimsical's only disclosed institutional round is a $30M Series A led by Accel, announced November 2, 2021. As of mid-2026, roughly 57 months later, no subsequent round has been reported.
Could AI replace Whimsical?
Whimsical's core task, text-to-diagram generation, is now natively doable by ChatGPT and Claude. Whimsical itself shipped a 'Whiteboard in ChatGPT' app via OpenAI's Apps SDK in 2026, embedding its product inside the very platforms that could disintermediate it.
Is Whimsical losing to Miro?
Miro is valued at $17.5B and claims (vendor-claimed) use by 99% of Fortune 100 companies, dwarfing Whimsical's roughly 37-person team and $7,200 median annual contract value as of 2026, putting Whimsical in a clear challenger position.
Who owns Whimsical?
Whimsical is a privately held, independent company founded in 2017 by CEO Kaspars Dancis and co-founder Steve Schoeffel, headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Its main outside backer is Accel, which led its $30M Series A in November 2021.
Who is Whimsical's biggest competitor?
Crustdata's June 20, 2026 tracker lists Miro, Zen Flowchart, and Lucidchart as Whimsical's top three competitors, with Figma's FigJam also cited as a distribution-advantaged rival benefiting from Figma's design-tool user base.
