The call

Zoom still makes money and keeps its biggest customers, but its core meeting product is losing ground to free bundled rivals while add-on products carry the growth.

Zoom lets people video conference and has built extra products like phone systems and team messaging. The problem is that Microsoft Teams and Google Meet come free inside Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, which most companies already buy, so customers have little reason to pay extra for Zoom. The company's own customers are shrinking their spending (growing only 4-5% per year instead of faster), which shows the free options are winning. If Zoom can get companies hooked on its phone and contact center products, it might survive, but that has not happened yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini bundled meeting AI. Free AI note-taking and summaries inside Teams and Meet make Zoom's paid AI Companion harder to sell as a reason to switch or stay. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Teams bundled into Microsoft 365). Teams comes free with Office subscriptions many companies already buy, and Zoom's retention rate below 100% shows customers quietly downsizing. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Zoom Phone, Contact Center, and Workvivo lock in enterprise workflows that are costlier to rip out than a meeting app.

Questions people ask
Is Zoom profitable in 2026?
Yes. Zoom Communications reported net income of $425.7 million for fiscal Q1 2027 (ended April 30, 2026) on revenue of $1.239 billion, up 5.5% year over year, per its May 21, 2026 earnings release.
Is Zoom losing customers to Microsoft Teams?
Zoom's net revenue retention fell to 98.3% in Q1 FY2027 (reported May 21, 2026), meaning existing customers are spending less on average. Analysts and reviewers attribute this partly to Microsoft Teams and Google Meet being bundled free into suites customers already pay for.
Could AI replace Zoom?
Core features like transcription and meeting notes are already commoditized: third-party tools like Tactiq work across Zoom, Teams, and Meet interchangeably (as of June 2026). Zoom's defense is its multi-product enterprise base of 4,534 customers over $100K ARR, not the meeting product itself.
Who is Zoom's biggest competitor?
Microsoft, via Teams bundled free into Microsoft 365, is Zoom's most cited competitive threat, followed by Google Meet bundled into Workspace. Both compete on distribution and price rather than video quality, per multiple 2026 third-party platform comparisons.
Did Zoom change its name?
Yes. Zoom Video Communications, Inc. legally renamed itself Zoom Communications, Inc. effective November 27, 2024, to reflect an AI-first strategy, though the consumer-facing brand remains simply Zoom.
How much did Zoom make from its Anthropic investment?
Zoom Ventures invested about $51 million in Anthropic in May 2023; by May 22, 2026 that stake had appreciated to roughly $1.3 billion, an unrealized gain of over $1 billion, per company-reported figures.
