China Durability: 825 Companies Assessed, July 2026
825 China companies assessed July 2026: 330 losing its protection, 91 built to last. State protection, not AI skill, splits the list.
What this is and how we score
WillItSurvive is a research site built on an assessment of 10,525 companies assessed in July 2026. Each company is researched from public filings, disclosures, and news coverage, then checked for factual accuracy before publication. In a blind backtest, we reviewed 116 companies that had already failed, using only facts that were knowable 18 months before their collapse, with identities hidden during review. We never declare an outcome for a living company; forward-looking material appears only as dated watch-items readers can verify.
Two measures matter here. Standing is a plain-language label running from "Hard to displace" (durable position, low visible threat) down through "Defensible for now", "Protection under test", "Losing its protection", and "Little protection left" (position substantially eroded or contested). Company-level revenue figures cited below come from our research briefs and should be verified against company filings and disclosures.
The headline numbers
Of the 825 China companies assessed in July 2026, 330 (37%) were rated losing its protection, the single largest standing group in the country. Only 91 of the 825 China companies assessed (July 2026) earned the top standing of Hard to displace, about one in ten. A further 165 of the 825 were rated Little protection left, the weakest label, and 129 were protection under test. Pressure runs high across the group: our July 2026 assessment found roughly a third of the list facing severe competitive or regulatory pressure. That is a rough neighborhood: two thirds of the list sits at protection under test or worse.
The wall that matters is state protection, not AI
The clearest pattern in the China data is not who uses AI best. It is who is shielded from competition by law, licensing, or state ownership. China State Railway Group, State Grid Corporation of China, State Power Investment Corporation, and China Yangtze Power each showed among the lightest competitive pressure of any company in the 825-company China list assessed in July 2026. China State Railway runs the entire national rail network as a state monopoly. State Grid controls roughly 80 percent of power transmission and distribution. China National Nuclear Corporation is one of only two entities licensed to run reactors, and it faced very little competitive pressure in the assessment.
The same protected tier includes the big state banks. ICBC, Bank of China, and Agricultural Bank of China were each rated Hard to displace in the July 2026 assessment, alongside China Merchants Bank, China Construction Bank, and Postal Savings Bank of China. Kweichow Moutai, protected by brand prestige and a five-year aging cycle rather than law, showed similarly light pressure. Top universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua, and Zhejiang University round out the tier.
Outside the wall, the fight is domestic giant versus domestic giant, and Huawei shows up as the aggressor in multiple pressure lanes. Our July 2026 pressure map records Huawei's Ascend server push pulling state and enterprise AI-server buyers away from Inspur's Nvidia-based hardware (Inspur: Losing its protection). It also records Huawei's MetaERP and Kingdee winning large-enterprise customers from Yonyou, whose brief notes mid-market revenue down 12.3 percent and legacy software revenue down 49.4 percent (figures worth checking against Yonyou's own filings). In security, a crowded field including Qi An Xin, Knownsec, Alibaba Cloud, and Tencent Security leaves smaller vendors like Qihoo 360 (Losing its protection) without a distinct edge; Baidu Security sits in the same weaker band in our July 2026 assessment.
Already broken before AI arrived
A second group never got to compete on AI at all. China Evergrande Group sat among the most heavily pressured companies in the 825 China companies assessed in July 2026, alongside Gome, Hozon Auto, Byton, Zhangmen Education, DaDaABC, NetEase Kaola, Cgtz, Bordrin Motors, and Trovo. Evergrande is a court-ordered liquidation estate. Gome's brief records revenue down about 99 percent since 2021 as JD.com, Alibaba, and Pinduoduo absorbed its customers. Hozon Auto's brief records a roughly 98 percent year-over-year sales drop as BYD, Xiaomi, and Huawei-backed brands took its budget EV buyers, and Byton never delivered a car. These are pre-AI casualties of debt, regulation, and price wars; verify the revenue figures against public reporting.
Property is the deepest crater. Country Garden, Sunac, Greenland, Kaisa, Shimao, Sino-Ocean, Guangzhou R&F, Gemdale, China Aoyuan, Logan Group, Powerlong, and China Vanke all sit at Little protection left in the July 2026 assessment, among the most heavily pressured names in the sector. The exceptions prove the rule: state-backed China Resources Land and China Overseas Land & Investment carry markedly milder ratings than their peers.
Sector notes
Couriers: Yunda Express (Losing its protection) has flat parcel volume while STO and YTO are growing volume more than 18 percent in the same price-war market, per our pressure map. Aisino faced severe pressure in the July 2026 assessment because the State Taxation Administration's own national e-fapiao platform now handles invoicing directly, displacing Aisino's hardware and software role.
AI labs and EVs: DeepSeek, Zhipu AI, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, and Baichuan AI all sat at losing its protection in July 2026, as did NIO, XPeng, Li Auto, and Xiaomi Auto. Being famous in AI does not translate into a protected position here.
Platforms: Tencent, NetEase, Douyin, and CATL (all Hard to displace) anchor the private-sector top tier. Alibaba Group was rated protection under test, Baidu losing its protection, and Meituan and Xiaomi also losing its protection in the same July 2026 pass.
Questions this data answers
Which China companies faced the least competitive pressure in July 2026? China State Railway Group, State Grid, State Power Investment Corporation, China Yangtze Power, and Peking University showed the lightest competitive pressure of any companies in the July 2026 assessment of 825 China companies. All hold positions created by law, licensing, or state monopoly rather than product competition.
How weak is China's property sector in this list? Among the 825 China companies assessed in July 2026, developers dominate the Little protection left tier: Evergrande, Logan Group, Country Garden, Sunac, Greenland, Gemdale, Sino-Ocean, and China Vanke all carry that label. Only state-backed names like China Resources Land avoided the weakest labels.
Are China's AI startups rated as durable? Mostly not. DeepSeek, Zhipu AI, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, StepFun, and Baichuan AI were all rated losing its protection in July 2026, reflecting a crowded domestic race rather than any judgment about their technology.
Why is Aisino under pressure? Aisino faced severe competitive pressure in the July 2026 assessment because the State Taxation Administration's national e-fapiao platform now handles tax invoicing directly, replacing the hardware and software role Aisino used to sell. E-fapiao adoption rates are the watch signal to track.
Does WillItSurvive predict which companies fold? No. We publish standings and dated watch-items only, and never declare an outcome. That is a track record claim about our method, not a forecast about any living company.
Watch-items (dated, verify yourself)
- By December 2026: whether Yunda's parcel volume growth stays below the 18 percent pace STO and YTO were posting.
- By June 2027: whether e-fapiao expansion continues shrinking Aisino's tax-hardware revenue.
- By December 2027: whether Huawei's Ascend-based server share keeps rising at Inspur's expense.
